"I'd want to bring it back one last time to see if there is anything else I want to retrieve before I consign it to PC heaven"

he wants to retrieve data
So thats a data recovery.

No1 rule of data recovery is NEVER write to the drive. NEVER
So that means .....
*** DO NOT ATTEMPT ANY REPAIRS ON THE DRIVE ***
**** ACCESS THE DRIVE THE LEAST AMOUNT POSSIBLE ****

try a repair LAST , only when all other options failed :-)

Just a quick update to my fellow forum geeks!

In the end, the oldest IT solution of all helped me to get the old boy to boot up one last time.

Thankfully, I'd backed up most of what I needed a few months back. The few bits & pieces I did need, seemed intact and not corrupted.

The advice on here was helpful all the same and will certainly keep in mind in the future.

Good time to consign this machine to the scrap-heap, especially with support for Windows 7 being imminently withdrawn. Off to find my credit card now, I suppose......
