My last resort is going to be to leave my computer on and stay up (or set my alarm to wake me up ) at just before 12 am and maybe I will be able to see what is happening then, I'll do this on Saturday which is my day off.

You have to manuallyt update the video drivers from the manufacturer - not from Windows Update. The majority of faults and crashes on Windows comes from outdated NVIDIA drivers.

I'd give this a go first Marcos - you don't have to get up for this :-)

If you look in the windows event logs it should tell you why the computer is turning on

I have made a number of changes to mostly my Spyware settings to do with automatic anything and I'm not sure which one it was the the problem seems to be solved now. Thanks everyone for your advice except the Ghost in my machine comment but I Did like the pic ture with this comment. Oh and by the way if I did have a Ghost in my computer I'm sure  it wouldn't be John clarke running around with a singlet and gumboots on.
