If you are going to remove McAfee (and I guess you are) don't forget to run the removal tool after uninstalling. (hosted by Major Geeks, also available at McAfee). Sometimes McAfee leaves stuff behind, like Norton.
I like and have used Avast for about 2yr. No problems. Have also heard good things about Avira. Try them both. (seperately, of course.) Use the one that works best for you.
correct it has no real time i.e. memory resident dynamic scanning ability [yet] but I don't find that a problem I just schedule scans to be regular. Most real time scanners I find to be hogs and of questionable value for the overheads incurred. So far I really like ClamWin - fast and light and of course open
