Windows 7 won't see more memory than Windows Vista if this is a problem with the BIOS or chipset capabilities.

no it wont unless you go 64 bit, which constitutes a clean install as you cant upgrade 32 -> 64 bit OS

And you are aware of the pros and cons of switching to a 64bit OS, particularly in regards to software compatability?

Although I am sure there are some programs that have issues (I know a few codecs are not available for 64bit OS) however on my main PC I am yet to find a app that has an issue.
The closest I have found is the Navman Software which says on the disk that is does not support Vista 64 and yet is running fine under W7 x64!Cool

I have been running Vista x64 since not too long after release and other then some hardware manufactures being slow on driver releases (creative I am talking about you!) it has been great.

hellonearthisman:  Have you tryed running linux on that to see if the hardware can map the ram.  If it doesn't support the 4GB ram as advertised then you should be able to get your money back or a store credit for something that works as advertised.

Some of the 3GB ram could be used by the laptops videocard ie 128MB

well i give up :) sony ... bleh

having said that, at a few dollars over $1000 last year it was and still is(!!!) the cheapest laptop with 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor. otherwise yeah i would've asked for a refund long ago
