My understanding is that a upgrade tool is very unlikely. The issue is that the way Vail teats the shared storage has been completely reworked and is not at all compatible with V1. Because of this there is no way for them to migrate data from V1 to V2.

Thankfully I do not have 8TB of data to transfer but regardless I do not what the cost of having to buy extra disk on top of however much Vail is going to cost.

Just adding my 2c here - I have also heard that with the new storage file structure in Vail you will not be able to view what files are on what on your (say) Win 7 machine in the event of a hardware failure etc etc. The new file structure is a new propriety system - as i think the v1 structure was based on ntfs?

I'm loving my WHS v1 box tbqh - not sure that I'll make the jump to v2 anytime soon though. Just got to figure out how to get media monkey running on the WHS box.

There is a VERY long thread in the Microsoft foums that covers off a lot of this:

Basically WHS V1 used NTFS and all files where duplicated at a FILE level between available physical drives - so if your WHS crashed your could take out the drives, add them to any other Windows PC and access all the data.

WHS V2 (the Drive Extender or DE part) has changed, they now use a system to allocate chunks of data between drives BELOW the file system, which means the above restore process won't work.

However personally I think with folder duplication turned on, there is little to worry about.

BTW - has anyone here used the WHS Beta 2 refresh (from August)? Any comments? I am about to build a box for it and run in parallel with my WHS V1 box, just wondered how table it was.

I'm tossing up whether to take up the Tech Ed 2010 offer (there are around 40 units left) of the HP Data Vault X510 1TB (3 slots free) for ~$900.

Alternative I have in mind is a DIY build (probably based on an atom board with 4x sata or maybe i3 + H55) running either Ubuntu Server or Eon Storage (Open Solaris + ZFS).
