youc ould try to boot to recovery console.  and run chkdsk /p /r

to do this

pop in you xp disk and boot to it

when it asks you to press r for repair on the first page. hit r

End of Pc RIP.

Pc was working ok for a few weeks, being having trouble with vista. Reformatted hard drive, loaded vista, but couldnt downloaded any updates, worked through it with a lady from microsoft.  Lastnight realised when i shut the Pc down earlier in the day it hadnt shut down completely.  Tried to reboot and just got scrambled graphics, and no reboot. Tried another few times same result, different scramble, fourth time went to no video imput, lights and fans buzzing but nothing.  I think the cpu is knackered, all previous hard drive tests have been ok.  Toying with the idea of geting a new motherboard and cpu, hard drive. Board has only one amd2 socket so, whilst it struggles(d) then, will fall even far behind soon.  Anyone got any cheap bits n peices give us a shout, gonna check trademe and pricespy, looks like i can make up a budget pc at pretty good price compared to shop bought.

Well thanks for all your helpSmile will be back on soon, this laptop ive realised is so slow, but faster than the old ones i used to play platform on, (zx81 ---spec48 --- beeb b) i used to get a srewdriver prise up the chip, straighten the pins, blow off the dust and hey presto, back to playing twin kindom valley, what a classic.

Quick thing to do would be to try ram. that could do the trick for ya. If you got some lying around bingo. Most pc shops would slap some in just to try it for you. if its not that nothing lost
