I have a few issues with media player mainly and windows explorer crashing and having to restart. They are the only major bugs so far. Although having to continually allow programs can get annoying. Hopefully the next build addresses a few of these issues.

The big disappointment is compatibility, 99% of programs that worked on 98 worked for XP, so i am expecting the same will be true for Vista come final release

bradstewart: I've installed 5308 and am loving it so far, however i am having a few issues with that maybe somebody can help me with.
. Drivers will not install ie printer, sound card etc.
. Cannot get virus scan to install, i have trend micro interent security 2006, but it says it doesnt support the platform, does anybody know any way around this?
. And it also seems to run quite slow on my PC, did a clean install, i have a 3200+, 1Gb etc top end PC

I know its still beta but anybody got any ideas on this and a virus scan that will work?

1. I haven't found too many problems with drivers, sometimes you may have run their SETUP.EXE installers in XP compatibility mode (right click, properties on setup.exe to set) Otherwise just point Vista's device manager to the INF files etc. Also check Windows Update (in the control panel, there are now heaps of drivers up there for 5308)

2. Personally I am running eTrust AV 7.1 but will be migrating over to a beta of Microsoft Client Protection this week. One of our customers in the early adopter program for Windows Vista is running TrendMicro version 7.3 successfully on the Feb CTP)

3. Performance today is not stellar, heck its not even beta2. You can expect performance to get a lot better from here on out to RTM

Cheers
Nathan

What i've experienced from Vista so far indicates it will be an awesome OS when done. I thought maybe that at this stage it might've had a few less bugs so that i might have been able to use it on an everyday basis.

I've only been using it just to test new software we are developing because i found it a bit buggy, but got my self another PC so will install it on that to use it more intensively and see if i can get some of those issues sorted out

What you're seeing today with the Feb CTP (5308) was forked from the main build tree back in January, the later builds we are running are definitely faster already.

Hopefully there will be an interim build available to beta testers before having to wait for the big bang of beta2/RC0 in about 2 months. We're working on getting that out now.

Either way beta2/rc0 will be feature complete and perf will definitely be better (it already is!)

Cheers

I didnt realise until tonight that there are two versions of 5308. There's 5308.17 and 5308.60. Interesting, apparantly .60 is much faster and more stable. Very glad i didnt download .17, .60 has enough instabilities and memory issues. Makes testing a bit of a nightmare when drivers arent available.

Can somebody tell me what an unchecked build is?

There are a lot more versions than 5308.17 and 5308.60 but we only need to worry about that internally

the short answer is 5308.17 is the February CTP for Windows Vista, 5308.60 is the February CTP of "Longhorn" Server

Please don't run 5308.60 of Windows Vista, this isn't a useful testing scenario.  Only download .60 if you are going to test Server.  I really doubt that it is much faster and more stable :)

There is now pretty good driver coverage on Windows Update (from the control panel) else try the XP drivers (may have to install in XP compat mode, or just point device manager at the .inf)

Personally I have had good luck with drivers on numerous pieces of hardware with either of those

Technical Beta testers will have access to an interim later build of Windows Vista very soon now, probably next week

PM me (with your passport address) if you want to get in on the technical beta

An unchecked build is one that doesn't include debug code (which IS in checked), you're not thinking of unstaged builds vs staged builds are you?

Hey Nathan,

Just thought I'd ask here rather than PM you so that others interested might know as well.
For the scheduled chats on the beta program for Vista Testers, are there any transcripts/followups for those that cant make the chats, sometimes the chats are not convenient with our local time and sometimes you just miss them...

I wanted to join twice now, but failed in both, and there doesnt seem to be a way to follow up on discussions ...

Yeah i just read on net that the vista versions in both are the same. I downloaded .60 cos i didnt know the difference, but no worries there since im not testing server. I have had a bit more luck recently with drivers.

What is the difference between the connect beta and technical beta? Do the technical testers get more builds released to them?

Also staged vs unstaged?

Will PM my passport email to you. Thanks.

Hey Guys has anyone else who installed the build noticed this. If you go to the control panel, and switch to classic view you see 'Power Options' listed twice...

If it's not me only, I'll report my first vista bug! tho someone else probably did that already....

It must be a problem with Microsoft then... When I was running the Windows Mobile Beta (a.k.a. Magneto) on my Pocket PC it was also showing two Power applets in the Settings panel. Perhaps Windows Vista is actually running Windows Mobile under the hood?

I feel bad about the above now, I just noticed that if you log in into your connect profile, you can see a transcript of all the previous chats... (wish I noticed this before I posted the above! :-) )
