Thank you all! I am probably too sensitive at the moment and I blame the quake. I would like to know more about how to do things like this so will talk to my aunties pc friends.
Half virgin means I know some but not all lol. I am good with programs and all but not the technical side. Sorry if people thought I was being over the top.

I have friends and rellies in Ch. Most, to some degree, are suffering from sleep deprivation and are a little jumpy at times.
Don't blame them (nor you) at all.

The chances have to be reasonable it's just the power supply that's stuffed, and the info on the hard drive will be recoverable.

A fairly savvy friend should be able to remove the hard drive and slave it to another computer, it's fairly straightforward. Make sure you choose a friend who has actually done it, though, not one that seems competent and merely willing to have a go, on the basis of: "how hard can it be?"

Oh God, what've I done to it now??

Buy one of these

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Computers/External-storage/External-hard-drives/auction-324360215.htm

Easy to put your hard drive in it then you just plug it in to your PC with a USB cable then problem solved :)
