trig42: I haven't seen it on Win7, but have seen it a few times on Vista (after updates). System restore solved it, but that's no good for you.

Was it a clean install?

Yeah, it was a clean install (with drive re-format). Think we are just going to have to do another one.

Go into the Windows 7 Local Security Policy

Under computer configuration -> administrative templates, clicking on Printers.

Then double click on Point and Print restrictions and selecting enabled.

Click ok.

We were getting it after the user had logged in, after logging in as a local admin (didn't experience the issue) we made that policy change and it resolved the issue for other users.

Although Remote Registry is set to Manual by default you could see if another PC on this network can access the registry remotely. Also, have you tried accessing RDP to see if you can see the desktop from another PC?

I believe RDP is off by default. It's just going to be easier to do a fresh install.

Try rebooting with all the USB and other devices unplugged even the keyboard - only the monitor and power connected.  This worked for me.  If it complains, plug in the keyboard.

Procrastination eventually pays off.

Wouldn't write too long...have same problem running windows 7 ultimate 32bit upgrade on Toshiba setallite A500. All was good untill 2/52 ago-blue screen(after win update and daughters sonyericson suit)/started safe mode/restored to earlier state, further week ater windows update-very..verrryyyy..slow freezes up /unable to shutdown , had to use power button.
Now unable to start in any mode (pls note i could start normally and in safe mode on a couple of occassions when it initially gave me a choice on statup-as it was not closed down properly-used power button)..now just black/dimly lit screen with mouse pointer
Haven't tried chkdsk etc -(don't kno if much help after reading various forums)
Is it possible to "upgrade"to 64 bit? or try repair from win7 ultimate disk
any help most appreciated, thanks in advanced

I had a similar problem (black screen of death) back at the beginning of March. Used the original install disk to rebuild the BCD and no more problems thus far.

I am being warned about a failing drive (data only and it's all backed up) so an SSD will be in order soon, and a failing battery... :-)

I have a couple of thoughts.

First up, mostly unrelated, but when you installed Win7 on an SSD sometimes it hangs for a half hour during the install before it does anything. So sometimes pauses can be recovered from.

I got Win7-64 installed, SP1 installed (via a download I did I could be up to the latest patches before I went online), then installed all the patches using windows update. One of them stuffed the computer, but the restore features worked.

In your case i'd:
- Reinstall windows
- Install SP1 before you connect to the net
- Create a restore point and a backup using the built in windows backup and recovery system
- Installed the rest of the updates
- Another backup
- Install your software
- Another backup/restore point

That way if it happens in future you can recover to whatever point you want to.
