I got home to find the updates had installed correctly. Looking at the logs, they'd tried unsuccessfully on four different occasions. Wonder what was going on there.

Second day in a row I've turned my PC on and before windows loads, i get this screen:

Windows is configuring updates
0% complete

5 minutes later, it says updates failed, reverting back and then windows loads as per normal.

Don't have time to investigate now but just wanted to report...

Running Windows 7 64 bit service pack 1.

And you've seen others have reported this was fixed after installing SP1? Are you running SP1 yet?

vinnieg: Same thing happened to mine, do the following if still having issues:

- Control Panel
- in the search tab, type Troubleshoot
- click the Troubleshoot tab
- under System and Security hit "Fix Problems with Windows updates"

Just tried this solution and it worked!!!

OK, this morning i turned my PC on and i'm still getting the same issue.

This is frustrating now...

EDIT: Just tried the suggestion of installing each update one by one... took a while but it did the trick.

Hi all,

Seems many are having trouble with the exact same four KB # updates. In my case they have failed to install on shutdown on 6 consecutive dates.

KB2515325
KB2522422
KB2492386
KB982018

Others have reported that installing Win7 SP1 update then allows these 4 troublesome KB# updates to be installed.

As suggested elsewhere, I went to MS update page and manually tried to install one at a time (prior to SP1 upgrade) and was told that they were not for my computer. This is why they failed in the auto update process.

Since Win 7 SP1 is not considered required, it does not install automatically, even if you have updates set to install automatically.

It appears these 4 troublesome updates must be to SP1 as they will not install until you update to SP1.

I can also verify that once Win 7 SP1 was installed, these four troublesome updates then installed properly.

So, go into your Win 7 updates and review them and check SP1 upgrade only (uncheck all of these others) and run SP1 only. Restart when offer. Then return to your Win updates (via Start-All Programs-Windows Update) and then go into pending updates and check the four KB#'s above and run those. Restart again when offered and it should fix the problem.

I am glad that fixed it for you, but I still think its a big oversight that Windows tries to install things that it can't handle...

Great, another one won't install. Says I have to install a 'hotfix' (whatever that is), but I have to send a request off with email address etc, sounds stupid. And I thought Win7 was going so well until this started happening....

And what do you know, I got it to work. Here's the issue: for update B to work, it needed update A installed. But it tried to install B and it didn't want to install A. So when I told it to install A, then install B it worked.

Really Microsoft, how hard is it...

Indeed, I think Microsoft didn't plan properly for this update. Sending required updates for a non-required update seems like an big error. Maybe one of their MVP's or even first-line tech support folks might pick this up and fix their approach.
