farcus: if they wont play in VLC then they are either corrupt or encoded with very strange codecs that almost nobody uses.

Well if you read all the posts above you would know that we are talking about files encoded with MSS1 codec - proprietary for Microsoft. And they are not curropted, as some players play audio, others video.

I guess you missed the part of my post where I said " . . . or . . . codecs that almost nobody uses."

btw - the file you linked plays audio for me but no video.
I use smplayer on Opensuse (linux). I believe it may be available for windows - not sure - but it still doesn't really get you anywhere as there is no video.

I was able to do that, meaning to play audio OR video. But never both :( This is starting to be very frustrating.

this should be the audio codec you need (assuming using the same as original poster).

If you can get video then in combination with this it may work.

The free portable version of MPlayer WW plays your WMV file here perfectly. Video + Audio.

Windows 7 x64.

next step - convert to a usable format that can be read by the more common media players ?

I have a similar issue with old B&W Quickcam vids (1995 era) , and most if them are candid vids when the kids were little ( 10-ish ) and playing around with the camera. Some have sound, some not, some show video. it's a weird AVI codec setting, but have been able to transcode quite a few to a normal playable AVI by using <dang, forgot the name of it software, but has an anime loader screen>. But much the same situation, using a codec from last century !! LOL
