lugh:
TheBartender: I do see the word 'usually' there, implying there are occasions where updates are included, maybe this is the case with an operating system.....will have to enquire...

Seeing as the actual software is the same on all the Vista discs and is reliant on the license key to designate the edition for installation, do ya reckon that the academic license key is likely to disable features further?  That's one theory being bandied about my department.

Updates are available. Upgrades are not. It means you have all the updates, patches, etc, including Service Packs, but the software is not entitled for an Upgrade.

For example if you buy Vista Academic, and then buy "Next OS" at upgrade prices, as soon as you try to install "Next OS" it will scream that you don't have a valid registration with an upgrade option. That's all...

MSDN Academic Alliance. Like MSDN, except for tertiary students who don't pay for anything (NZ govt signed the $30m deal).

Oh... This is different then. You should ask someone at Microsoft then (unless someone else here knows the answer and is willing to share).

Jed: Heres a question: Does anyone know what flavour of Vista will be avaiable for us MSDNAA people?

I've just got an e-mail confirming Windows Vista Business Edition is the one available with MSDNAA subscriptions in New Zealand.

And here was me thinking I'd be getting Ultimate.

freitasm: Er... Have you seen how much is the Mac OS X? And you realise that from 10.2 to 10.3 to 10.4 there's no free upgrade and no upgrade price?

While there is no free upgrade or upgrade price for Mac OSX, the boxed retail version of OSX costs NZ$239.00 at The Apple Store (New Zealand) -- which less than the price ($229 + GST = $257 .52) of the Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade DVD, the cheapest option out of the various Vista offerings.

(There can't really be any OEM comparison, given that Apple's hardware pricing seems to be more about ensuring that its products fit certain segments rather than cost + margin).

Of course, the comparison never ends once you get down to looking at which OS offers which features, but in general terms, you cannot claim that Mac OSX is more expensive than Windows.

Sorry to step in at such a late stage of the conversation.

Warm regards
C.Mullins
