This is by design

To remove a wireless profile when not in range you use NETSH

Put a win8 laptop and win7 laptop side by side in standby

Resume

The win 8 will latch onto WiFi and get IP and surfing the web heaps faster

Well my Win7 Laptop is connected to Wifi and ready to browse within <1 sec on resuming. Not sure how you can get quicker than that, not that it matters anyway as it is already quicker than I can get to the keyboard.

I've got no complaints about how long Win 7 takes to latch onto WiFi when using a decent laptop. It isn't really any significant amount of time. Most people use Hibernate on their laptops, so it won't make a lot of difference there.

Because Win 8 is about to be released, I decided I'd better upgrade my Desktop PC from XP before Win 7 disappears from the shelves. XP has done the job brilliantly since 2002, but having switched to Win 7/64-bit, it is nice to be able to use my full 4GB of RAM at last. It was also good to get rid of Office 97 and switch to the 2010 version. I've been using 7 on my laptop for a couple of years, but hadn't gotten around to upgrading my desktop until last month.

So Windows 8 will be a NO for me, at least for several years, because 7 is a damn fine OS.

It remains to be seen, if in fact Windows 8 turns out to be another Vista that few people bother with.

Be cheaper to upgrade your XP to 8 than 7. 8 pro with media centre upgrades will be nz49.99 next week

Well my Win7 Laptop is connected to Wifi and ready to browse within <1 sec on resuming. Not sure how you can get quicker than that, not that it matters anyway as it is already?quicker?than I can get to the keyboard.

You'll likely find its a combination of the 7 drivers and the APs you're connecting to. I've seen it a lot and really notice how much faster 8 is

No for me. Metro is a HUGE fail for productivity, without a touchscreen it's hopeless. No start menu=fail. No resizable metro apps, no sign of them on the start bar, poor multiscreen support for metro apps.

Worst release of Windows I can ever recall and MS has stopped listening to it's partners.

Just curious, what about the start menu is it that gives you this huge productivity boost? I've come across many people lamenting the lack of a traditional start menu, but when I actually think about my usage of the start menu, it's not a big loss at all.

I rarely use it other than using the search box to find an app... which IMO Win8 has improved. All my most frequently used apps are pinned and I start the most important ones with windows key + 1-9. Anything that's not pinned - I just hit windows key and start typing the name of it then enter.

Metro apps... OK I'm not sure of the point on a desktop, but it's not like non-metro apps are disappearing. I must say, I was quite wary of Win8 initially but it has grown on me.

I'm still pretty open to windows 8, I like the new UI and have no problem without a start menu. Anyone worried about productivity should be using the windows key anyway.

The one thing that I need to investigate is the switching between Metro and non metro apps. If this is a pain or a bit slower than windows 7 switching that will really put me off. Otherwise for $50 I will probably upgrade.

I use win8 with my laptop on dual screens in the office, and on the laptop screen when away. no touch screen, yet I don't have any real big usability problems.

starting programs is the same as before, win key + type + enter (as per sidefx), or click on pinned taskbar icon.

I *don't* use hibernate. I *do* use suspend and its awesome fast. I also use Hyper-v on the laptop and the fact that it suspends/resumes is a huge productivity boost (sometimes the h/v guest even maintains a VPN session)

looking forward to swapping my laptop for a hybrid touch device so I can take advantage of the tablet features properly, but i'm not really missing anything versus windows 7- in fact booting back into my win7 partition feels unnatural now...

Wait, why such a design choice? How hard is it to add a UI for being ablet to see and remove saved wifi networks? O_o

I'll probably switch to it. But a lot of it still strikes me as incomplete software. it feels like the experience is almost there, but not quite fully integrated, and not quite refined. I'd be keen to see if this is updated in a service pack or waits till windows 9 for more of a polished experience.

Server 2012 server manage also feels a little bit off, its also almost there, but lots of little irks and quirks about it make it frustrating.

Also i find the shutdown challenge for new users quite hilarious

Not being able to resize Windows Store apps to any size you choose is different than the full screen start screen

There just wasn't time to get that resizing work done for 8

These partners are they the hardware ones that are trying to compete by lowering prices in a race to the bottom, filling their PCs with crapplets and nagware AV that pesters you till you put a credit card in, and covering their laptops in ugly stickers? Cause that's hardly working out well for anyone involved

No start menu != fail

The start menu is still there, it's now full screen, the icons are larger and far more customisable.

I'd really love to understand how the start screen effects your productivity so I can pass your comments on to the right people designing vNext

Yea why take away an easy to use gui for managing / removing wireless profiles and force users to the command line?
The command line doesn't seem to fully work either.
I was able to reconnect to my home wifi, after I changed the password, but now my Win8 laptop shows two networks, 'Home' & 'Home 2'.
The 'Home' one is the one that it is connected to so not sure why it is showing a network called 'Home 2' as no other devices show that network as being available. And no it's not a neighbours network as it has only appeared since I made the change on the router and it disappears if I turn the router off.
The router doesn't have an option for more than one SSID.
