a well built desktop program *should* uninstall cleanly, including its registry entries. If not then its either by design (i.e. not deleting data and settings so if you reinstall you get them back), or by laziness - not building the installer apps correctly.

Orphan registry entries don't generally 'slow your computer down", but there are a bunch of companies that make money (adware or paid products) convincing you that they do!

Best things to speed up a slowing computer are (not necessarily all at once):
- SSD Disk
- more memory
- uninstall non-essential apps
- reinstall
- switch antivirus/antimalware vendors

Not sure if the store apps are completely removed on uninstall. They might store settings in the cloud, so you can share settings between devices, or so you dont lose in-app purchases if you uninstall/reinstall them.

to those who think i'm ranting I must say I do like the ability to use my new gen laptop like an ipad but will all the windows functionality that i'm slowly discovering/ getting to grips with ...

I have also learnt that because I have been so comfortable with my 3 year old PC I haven't been up to date with the latest programs - installing everything with a current version gave so much problems! for example VLC 2.1.1 jitters like mad, and google suggested 2.1.0 and it's smooth as ... (my old laptop uses VLC 1.x - if is ain't broke ...)

but alas -

when oh when will more ipad apps appear ?

also every time I use remote desktop to control my old laptop now relegated to an HTPC logs it out of the TV ...
is there any remote desktop that is about fully functional that doesn't log the laptop out? i'm guessing the answer is no

If you are using Microsoft RDP, depending on what user account you are using, it will either take over the user session on the laptop and display it on your computer or it will log out the current user and log you in. It sounds like what you want is something like chrome remote desktop or teamviewer that allows you to shadow the current session and interact with it rather than logging in remotely.

sorry to ask for the moon. about to test chrome remote desktop and wonder:

- will I be able to sleep the thing and wake it up via chrome remote desktop?

if not what else could be possible to do that with?

You can only wake up a PC via a device - LAN for example. Your PC must support it and have it enabled in the BIOS, the network card must support it and if you want a program to wake the PC you have to either forward a port in your router (which might lead to other people turning your PC on) or have another PC in the network that is always running and ready to wake up your PC (Logmein works like this).

chrome remote desktop needs the original computer to send a code and then accept - so it's not handsfree?

I'm going to try teamviewer and logmein ... any other recommendation?

just did some googling and teamviewer meets the bill.

tried it and it works!

i hope the guys aren't recording my sessions?

this windows 8 out of the dell box is pretty hopeless -

after clean installing the intel GPU drivers the screen is still black on waking up from sleep.

I've also discovered that the Nvidia control panel ONLY has "3d Settings" and nothing else. no picture, video or any other setting.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled it. maybe there is another way of uprooting the thing.

if I cannot get this working I am tempted to clean install windows 8.

can anyone tell me if I can do a clean reinstall and use my same win 8.1 pro key? I have no media discs so I am going to download it - which one should I download?

I have manually uprooted everything in safe mode and guess what

NVidia tells me "there is no monitor connected to your NVidia GPU".

under device manager I have a "generic uPNP monitor attached to windows basic display driver"

so it appears my monitor is connected to Intel HD Graphics an I have an Nvidia 3D piggy back.

what the boson is this??

Do not reinstall. Perform a refresh:

- Settings | Change PC Settings | Update & Recovery | Recovery | Remove everything and reinstall Windows.

Yes because you said "after clean installing the intel GPU driver" so I can't trust that the drivers aren't screwed up.

Refresh so it's again like out of the box. Do not manually update drivers unless those are offered by Windows Update or Dell update utility.
