The improved command prompt and virtual desktops will be pretty nice IMO, but yep aside from that not too much reason to upgrade

I'm happy to upgrade, if everything works just fine. So will make a full system image, upgrade, then see what happens. Clean install is best, but my silly laptop maker doesn't have standalone installer for some of their bundled things that i want!

Can you buy Windows 10 yet?

As in for clean installs that are not upgrades, or for upgrading OS's that are too old to get a free upgrade (not that I'd really want to be doing that for something that old...)

in a few weeks yes

You can do a "clean" install instead of an upgrade like this

You can use the downloadable ISO at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 which has an embedded product key.

Using that ISO, run SETUP.EXE *from within Windows 8.1 so that it can detect that you have a licensed, activated OS*.

Then when it asks what you want to migrate, choose “nothing” or “data only”.

That will result in a “clean” Windows 10 OS that can successfully activate.

I dont really have any reservations about upgrading, only thing I fear is the initial teething issues. But other than that, I am not afraid of changing to the new system. I got used to Windows 8 just fine.. The only OS I skipped entirely was Vista (lets not get started on that).

But I have generally been hearing good things about windows 10 in terms of performance etc. I did get annoyed by some small things about Windows 8 (Metro apps -> especially settings and the Mail app). But at least the Mail app is not a full screen Metro app. Just hoping it has resolved this one small issue (which is still a bug (FEATURE) in windows 8 mail app - I cannot seem to remove an email account from Mail. That account has an expired password and I dont have any option to remove it until I get a new password. I cannot get a new password since I have left that NGO).

Excited for the new upgrade. Will do it this weekend and see how it goes. Most likely going ahead with a clean install. If anyone has any gotchas, would be great to point them out.

I didn't like 8.1, but then I got used to it.

Windows 10 is better though for both touch and desktop. It's clean and simple. The gestures, action center, search function improvement, and speed are selling points for the desktop/laptop.

But there may be teething problems, and driver compatibility issues. I imagine they will still exist, even with all the extensive testing. That said, windows 10 auto-updates, and for the next while I think microsoft will be pretty hard out fixing any thing like that.

I installed it on my tablet, and everything works flawlessly - except one gripe, the 'right click' come out with lots of spacing between the options, too big a list, and can't be easily used on touch. I'd like to see that fixed, whatever that is, so that the spacing is normal again. Of course, in tablet moder that hardly matters, but it's nice to use both, and not have to plug in a mouse to clean up your desktop.
