I have a Linux-based PVR which I use for TV recordings so will not miss Media Centre at all.
What about Windows Media Player though?
I'm using version 12 which does everything I need, even though it is showing its age a bit. Still would be reluctant to lose it, so what options are there for Windows 10?
Jaxson: Can you buy Windows 10 yet?
As in for clean installs that are not upgrades, or for upgrading OS's that are too old to get a free upgrade (not that I'd really want to be doing that for something that old...)

in a few weeks yes
You can do a "clean" install instead of an upgrade like this
You can use the downloadable ISO at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 which has an embedded product key.
Using that ISO, run SETUP.EXE *from within Windows 8.1 so that it can detect that you have a licensed, activated OS*.
Then when it asks what you want to migrate, choose “nothing” or “data only”.
That will result in a “clean” Windows 10 OS that can successfully activate.
