I will check again but the BIOS is pretty limited. Don't know offhand exactly how old the machine is. I am typing this from another room. I would guess 8-10 years maybe. This is a dedicated streaming machine and it is fast enough for anything my RBI connection can throw at it and that was all I worried about at the time. I chose a SSD only for the silent operation because the fans on this PC are very quiet. I will try to set this up properly now that I know more about SSDs (thanks, guys) but I may end up just going back to an old technology drive. I had no idea this was all going to be such a hassle.

My junker machines to run the 3d printer and other hardware things on are 2008 era with an intel Q45/Q43 chipset according to device manager as I remote into it , so chances are pretty good that its supported. If you keep using the drive for huge amounts of writes then it will just go slow again. Trim is needed so that the drives controller can clean up and erase things ready for the next write command.

If all else fails SanDisk SSD Dashboard can use to manually trigger or schedule trim. My guess, it can do this even without AHCI support.

I applaud your bravery [uninstall of ie8] but such is the pain of non-standard configuration. I would suggest you reinstall it but at this late stage I'm sure it would give you a second long list of reconfiguration issues to sort out ; ).

I thought you could only go from IDE to AHCI with a clean install after changing the bios. I could be wrong

You are. You just need to enable the driver with a single registry key.

It's legacy to uefi boot that is a lot of hassle with partitions and stuff that is generally easier as a reinstall

Seeing as it is set up in legacy mode, what mode is the controller operating under? Should be a DMA mode and certainly not PIO mode.

The controller shows no mode at all. Completely blank.

I feel like I am in one of those nightmares where the faster you run, the more you go backwards. I am really fed up with this crap (not you who are trying to help, just the computer BS). All I want to do is have a working hard drive so I can stream some videos. I'm not trying to land on Mars. I will try the Registry fix when I get to it. If that doesn't help I will just get a legacy drive. I have had enough.

Just get a current piece of hardware and stop trying to do things on legacy stuff that may not support the needed modes for a sad to work correctly.

Since I started this thread I thought I should post an update. I finally decided I might as well see things through so I bit the bullet and downloaded IE11. When I tried to install it I got an error about some file at C:\ being corrupted. IE insisted I run checkdisk, though I had done that once before with unsatisfactory results, and I reluctantly complied. This time it ran much longer than the previous time, well over an hour, and again generated more errors than I could count. But when it finished the computer booted normally, nothing appeared lost (as had happened the previous time) and IE installed without further problem. Then I tried to install the Sandisk dashboard again. This time it complained about my screen resolution and wouldn't go any further. Changing the resolution and monitor didn't help but eventually I found a fix by disabling something in the shortcut. Seems pretty pointless to me to have to do it that way but eventually it loaded. And proceeded to do absolutely nothing. The Sandisk I have provides no information at all, no SMART, no other data. All I get is a blank screen with nothing that can be set or read or adjusted. Another nice waste of time.

The only upside is that this time checkdisk seems to have fixed whatever errors I had. As far as I can tell, everything is working normally again. However, I no longer trust the SSD on this system and I am going to go back to a more conventional drive as soon as I can obtain one. Although the Compaq is duo core, I cannot find any way to change the controller from IDE, even though I did the Registry fix. Possibly the BIOS firmware could be updated, but I am not prepared to mess with that. At my age I don't really want to be an experimenter any more. I just want the thing to work the way it is supposed to.

So that is the end of this story. I still don't know for certain if the problems I had were caused by Windows or by the drive. I just hope they won't return after I replace the drive. Once again I want to express my appreciation to everyone who tried to help me with this. Sometimes things like this can get very frustrating when you just want something to work but you keep running up against an escalating series of obstacles. My frustration was entirely to do with the situation, not those who offered helpful advice. At least I now know a lot more about SSDs than I ever wanted to.
