What if I just copied the vhd file would that work?

Yes, but will take up the most disk space and be a bit more inconvenient to recover from.

Are checkpoints easily deleted (ie by accident)?

You could copy the vhd file, but you will likely also need to copy avhd files as well or merge them. A better way to do a backup is to use the 'export' command to export the vm to your desired location. A restore is simply a matter of importing the backup.

In answer to another question, doing a checkpoint (previously called snapshots) I find it is preferable to shut the vm down first, although it is fine to leave them running. Use a checkpoint to make a restore point when doing upgrades or testing software - I would suggest doing an export to do the backup, although a ckeckpoint will use less space.

Checkpoints are easy to delete.

Much of the tasks can be scripted.

I think he's just talking about making an initial backup of the machine "as built", and not using checkpoints. If he's not using checkpoints their won't be any avhd's because the drive won't be differenced.

Ok so if I choose to make a copy of the VHD file it can be used to "restore" my Virtual PC? Not worried about the contents in the thing, just want to keep the retail Key I used to activate the virtual PC. There shouldn't be anything important in it, it's for use abuse and testing.

The idea behind virtual machines is that you baseline it before doing any testing. This is what checkpoints are for, when you have finished testing, you can restore to a previous checkpoint.
