No, it will be a replacement for my internal drives :)
Pleased to report that I connected it directly to the motherboard and it was detected successfully and is being formatted as I write this :)

This is turning into an exercise in frustration. Now the cradle won't even read my old (2TB) drive - yet it seemed to the other day with no issues. No idea what's going on here.

In any case, I've connected my old hard drive directly using a SATA cable to the motherboard, and am now copying everything to the new drive.

FWIW I haven't had a cradle that's lasted more than 3-4 years.. they all seem to die eventually.

welcome to windows 10. You will find via google numerous USB devices that suddenly do not work. You will also find with the monthly refresh that registry changes and settings revert to standard .make sure you write them all down.

have look at your old outlook express settings (advanced) hopefully leave a copy on the server etc is unticked. This leaves everything on the mails service providers web mail. When you set up xtra, gmail, or outlook/hotmail etc on your outlook 2016 it will all transfer down. I have xtra on outlook 2016 and gmail etc using thunderbird mail. with a few add-ons thunderbird equals outlook and it is free.

Sadly, I know that option is not ticked - I downloaded all the mail to my (old) XP desktop.

I suspect I'm going to need some sort of app to fix this, I just hope there's a free one...

Re the error message "either the folder is empty or being used by another program" is the folder you are directing Windows Live Mail to located on a non-NTFS file system?

If so, try making a copy of the folder contents to say the NTFS formatted system drive and try again.

sorry...if the options are unticked they are deleted after downloading. If ticked leave a copy on the server then the copies are still on the web server when you downloaded to outlook express. Can you see them in web mail?

Try sending an email to your self. Does it appear on your new PC?

Have you tried Thunderbird mail?

who is your ISP?

who is mail provider..xtra slingshot gmail etc?

2ND EDIT..

E-mail: What application do you use? I have MS Outlook 2016 on here (I have a couple of POP addresses), however the default Mail application looks horrible and completely non-customisab

I have done a google search about windows live mail.

It is not supported for windows 10 due to recent API changes.

it says not available for download.

No, the client should still work on Windows 10. What has ended is support for a proprietary protocol used by Windows Live Mail to sync Hotmail / Windows Live / Outlook.com email. It is necessary to use IMAP now to access those email services.

In saying that the Windows Live Mail client is end of support as signalled by its web installer being pulled so the OP should consider moving onto Thunderbird or really just accessing email through a web browser in the future. OP will need to arrange for emails stored on his hard disk to be transferred onto cloud services and this can be done by first importing them into a client such as Thunderbird and then syncing the local copy to the cloud.

I hope he reads ALL the search info I supplied. Note the option to load Thunderbird on the XP machine ,export from outlook express to Thunderbird on the xp machine . This changes the format.

Now export to a usb device. Now import on the windows 10 machine after setting up Thunderbird mail.

I dont think storing in the cloud and using web mail is an option worth pursuing.

Sorry did not click your the link before but I agree what you described would work.

I think the move to cloud services is certainly the future and made the suggestion as something the OP may want to consider.

That is a good idea and certainly something worth pursuing.

No the messages are not in my (Orcon) POP mailbox as I had them downloaded to my desktop PC. All went well until (I guess) the .dbx file became too big for Outlook Express 6 to read,then I started having these problems. I suspect the Inbox.dbx file is corrupted and I need some app to fix it so I can migrate it to my new machine - cloud storage is a good idea too. I recall discussing this in another thread on here...will have a search for it.
