I think if you need (or expect to need) more than 3GB of memory in the future, Vista (x64) is about the only viable option for a home user. That is, unless you can afford the licensing cost of the 64-bit Server 2003/2008 OS. So that is something Vista gives you that XP can't -- support for memory expansion. There is XP 64-bit but the less said about that the better. Given the work I do that requires at least 8GB, I had no other choice but to use Vista and it works perfect.

8GB makes me a minority, sure... for now, but it's not at all uncommon to see mid to high end off-the-shelf notebooks already kitted out with 3GB of memory. If they had any more, a downgrade to 32-bit XP would just be a waste of hardware since it can't adequately use more than 3.

Thanks one and all for the replies.

I think magu summed it up quite nicely with his first post.

However, the point with dxva2 is certainly worth noting (thanks DS248 & sbiddle) as are the points raised by Doctor (thanks Doctor, that's a nice bullet list). Also appreciated the point raised by digitalepsilon.

Perhaps it is the right time for Vista now - as chakkaradeep has intimated.

It's still not clear cut enough for me yet (well, unless maybe I'm looking towards a new PVR/HTPC perhaps).

I have Vista. It took me a while to get used to but I love it now. There are several 'useful' additions (and a multitude of memory hogging RMA bull&%*@ additions) but ultimately I think it's better than XP and, as Mauricio said, inevitable. DX10 cannot be overlooked and will be the mainstay of computer games of the future (this will only run on Vista). Just make sure you have a decent processor and at least 2GB RAM (667).

Hmm, so you need to define 'dumb user', after reading comments please define 'power user' for me.

I'd consider myself a power user. I wouldn't consider understanding how to disable things and knowing where to find things makes someone a power user.

As for the network repair...first port of call for me when network issues arise is the command prompt and thankfully vista is the same as xp, win2000, win98 etc. I have been using pc's since DOS 3.3 tho.

Is this a serious question? I mean this is semantics the point of the discussion is that Vista is a perfectly suitable OS for "dumb users" for reasons already stated and for more advanced users (I used power users for the lack of a better term) it allows customisation to suit them as well.

As Joe Says, this was the sole reason I went to Vista, new Graphics card with DX10 - Vista is the only one that "offically" supports DX10 as MS intended it.

Moving forward games will come out with DX10 as the focus for all their fancy effects.
