File is 2858.6MB going to take a long time to download, 3-4 hours its telling me. Bring on faster internet now

So Vista is usable? I'm looking at partitioning my hard drive so I can have both Vista and Linux, but I'd like to have a functioning MS OS while I experiment with Linux.

I use AVG as my virus scanner and ZoneAlarm, do they work or will I need to shop around for ones that will?

The latest build is very good, but it's has some conflicts with antivirus programs. There are some interesting comments on bradstewart's Geekzone Blog.

If you are going to use it on a separate partition, make sure you have at least 15GB available where you are installing the OS.

It depends on what you mean by usable really. I havent had any issues with general usage and I quite like the experience so far. Most of my programs that I had on XP work just fine on Vista but I havent tried Zonealarm or AVG. Did have some issues with more advanced usage but nothing major. You should be able to run most programs in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode...

I am currently using build 5308 and will upgrade to 5324 soon.

I've got a 160GB hard drive so I don't think that'll be an issue.

By usable, I mean working at least 50% of the time. I don't mind battling with Microsoft (who isn't used to that?) but I'd like it to work sometimes. I've got 5308 (I think, it's at the work at the moment) but I'm curious, where do you upgrade?

You should have your own access to the Microsoft Connect website, and download all updates and files from there, as well as the required keys. Copies are activated like any other Microsoft Windows installation.

Another way to have access is through MSDN subscriptions.

Awesome thanks for the heads up. Our SysAdmin has a TechNet subscription, so I have access to all the Betas and so forth, but have been too busy look at them (moving and job changing and all). But I'll definitely be having a look at this now, I don't want to be installing Vista with my eyes closed.

Just checking....You realise that you cannot upgrade to 5342. you must do a clean install.

I'm hanging out for B2 eagerly, my new buddy at MS tells me progress so far is amazing. 5342 which was just a snapshot of a few bug fixes from 5302 is now a long way behind what is happening now.

Has anyone ran into issues using the download manager in this build?

if yes, has this been resolved in build 5342 (brad)?

I cant get the download manager to open for some reason when I click "save target as"...etc

Also, even when I installed DAP it sometimes fails to load.

Be aware that at this stage you won't be able to upgrade from 5342 to the beta2 build either

I'm running 5356 and we just turned back on build-to-build upgrades which I do every other day, personally I also wipe and reload my machine regularly as well.

Doing upgrade over upgrade over upgrade is not that useful, because it doesn't emulate what real end users are doing.

The microsoft download manager works just fine for me, havent tried using DAP or similar yet.

Quite gutting that we will not be able to upgrade to B2 as i've been using 5342 as my main OS but set all my docs to the ones i use in my XP install on other partition so dont have to worry bout losing anything that way, but will we be able to use the USMT to transfer settings onto a new install?

If you're allowed to nathan.... what is 5366 like compared to 5342? EDIT: i've only been told in very general terms so far

Interesting, I have no idea why the download manager is not working with me. When you say it is working are you refering to buold 5342 or 5308 or both? I'm still using 5308

I never had any issues with the download manager in 5308 as i never used it, i found the build too unstable for general use and only used it for software testing.

I am only using 5342 at the moment and there are no issues with the manager there and i have used it extensively.
