thank you all for the advise and offer, bit far from the eastern suburbs. Tried recovery using ultimate CD- repair etc, restore won't work then tried restoring from last year- image restore-it did say failed but when restarted-things seemed fine. Quickly backed up and copied important files (said backup failed). Ran all sorts of tests =all seemed fine (Oh initially it said no OS on drive- sometime in the very begining during repair) Ofcourse...this did not last long and after windows update 65 of them!-critical ones (excet SP1 which failed), it started to hang...very slow..and could not shut down using start..shutdown button..probably back to square one! Seems like have to do a clean install or can I still try something with the Win& ultimate disc? If it helps, the hard drive seems to be working harder or bit noisier! Ok ..so the question is should I use recover DVDs or use Win7 CD to install thanks again
Fixed this problem on a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Vista 32 using a Vista Recovery CD found in a torrent (the original CD was missing). After a lot of rebooting and pressing F8 at the right moment we managed to get in a recovery menu that presented all System Restore points. We reset the system to one a few days / Windows updates back and (after a long wait) the OS completed a normal startup again.
