freitasm: I am using Chrome, as I said, because of the extensions and because it syncs my bookmarks, settings, extensions across my laptops. Other than this I don't think there's a use for it - a browser is a browser and IE 11 is pretty good.

You can get around the bookmarks one by moving the Favorites folder to Dropbox or OneDrive. With that done, IE 11 just seems better all round than Chrome., to me anyway.

Rikkitic: Why does everyone always act like there are only four browsers in the world? Opera used to be vastly superior to anything else until they ruined it. I tried Chrome and a lot of others and finally found Slimjet, which is built on the Chrome engine but comes closer to the old Opera than anything else out there. Highly configurable, can disable the Google snooping functions, works well overall, neat extras like the ability to save pages as pdf files. I miss Opera a lot less now.

I mostly stick to Chrome and Firefox. IE11 is too buggy and slow for my liking, even stripped right back to no add ons etc.

I have tried assorted other browsers (particularly on mobile), but have always been a little suspicious. I mostly believe the adage about if you're not the customer, you're the product. Since I don't know (and can't seem to find out via google) how they make money, I assume they must be doing something at least a little nefarious with regards to my browsing habits. At least with Google I *know* what nefariousness is going on and have largely made my peace with it.

Ironically, if one or other of these alternatives charged (even a notional couple of dollars), I'd probably be much more trusting. Like with the finance companies a couple of years back - 19% pa!? What's the catch? 9% pa? Please take my money! (I didn't actually invest in finance companies).

linw: Edge performs well but I have to wait for the finished product as I won't use any browser that doesn't have ad blocking capability and a favourites bar that allows me to arrange the links in the order I want, rather than alphabetic.

The Edge Favourites bar can be arranged as you like

Sorry, but the sort order is chaotic. Try importing 30+ of them and then try fixing the order. What you see in the hamburger vertical list doesn't match what you see in the bar displayed.

Hopefully, this will come right in the next try!

Its only in Windows 10, so yes you need a Windows 10 machine

in a VM, native, dualboot, in Azure, in AWS, in a VPS however you want to run it

Maybe, but Chrome does it between Windows, Mac, Linux, Android or iOS.

back on chrome 64 bit. eg rottentomatoes in ie with everything turned off, is very very unresponsive. then thought heck try chrome and it is super responsive.

The rotten tomatoes' home page makes about 240 http requests, 2.2MB, 20sec till load... so much third party junk... that's case an point for why people run addons like adblockplus / ublock (it still makes 80 odd http requests with ublock enabled too though!).... poor performance of that page is not necessarily any browsers fault.
