beforenightfalls: is NOD32 a free one or do you have to pay? where is the best place to get some of these different ones from as i live in the sticks!

if you have nod32 you can download it from the site eset.co.nz or nod32.co.nz and then pay for the reg via credit card but if your in the sticks im guessing you dont have broad band and it would take you amonth just to download it

If you are "getting rid of norton/symantic (sic)" then the users PC must have something else causing problems. I don't use Norton personally because I use Avast - with Avast Windows Home Server I can control up to ten PCs in my network.

But I did install the Norton 2009 and it does what it promises. Under 60 seconds installation, only 7MB RAM usage, and no more impact than Avast. And it removed completely without leaving anything behind.

Hello - just adding on my Vista 64 I use Comodo Firewall and Antivirus which is now Comodo Internet Security and its totally free and highly rated.  I prefer Comodo over Zonealarm and Avast and its a firewall a antivirus all in one.  Rge virus checker is much faster than Avast.  Comodo found some trojans that Avast missed.

I don't use a third party firewall on Windows Vista. The Windows Vista firewall is much more refined than the one in Windows XP - blocking incoming and outgoing connections, different settings for private, public and domain networks and more. So why add overhead?

I think too many people have been burnt by Norton over the past few years and even though they may have finally created a slimline offering with Norton 2009 like myself I can't see many others giving them a second chance.

yea they have norton on there pc, files get stuck when they uninstall norton. they install another antivirus over top and it locks down the computer. Once that issue is sorted its time to deal with any infections that norton did not pick up in the first place.

If you have a look on the symantic site they actually had to make another tool to remove norton because it was getting left behined. what a joke

May seem a joke. There are plenty of AV's have a special removal tool to remove "bits left behind". Including Avast, AVG, McAfee, Avira, and of course, Norton.
Seems to me that as the AV's, of necessity, run deeper into the system, in order to attempt to better deal with malware that installs deeper into the system, these uninstall tools are more frequently required than in times past.
What the vendors definitely could do is either improve the education of users, by being a bit more up-front that a removal tool is required, or have the tool download and run automatically as part of the uninstall routine.

Oh God, what've I done to it now??

I've been using Avira AntiVir Personal since the XP days and quite like it. It's free, well supported, highly regarded by the anti-virus community, resource-light and gets updated regularly. And, I've never been compromised by malware since I've been using it.

If one does decide to use it please configure it to "scan on read" for minimal system impact. By default, it's configured to "scan on read and write".
