I just don't get the direction MS are heading right now!

I am wondering about whether this tablet will need to reboot to have updates applied to it, or will take a while to boot up?

"First Microsoft Surface tablets will be Wi-Fi-only"

It appears to be just the first generation models. Most people I know who are interested in or own tablets go for the Wi-Fi only models because they all have mobile devices capable of tethering in the unlikely event they need to use the tablet in a 3G only area.

I think you are missing the issue.

1) MS are late to the tablet party, really late.
2) The product has no ETA for this market presently.
3) Almost everyone has a 3G Tablet, some people need this functionality, and lack of it will slow adoption

personally i really want one of these, i was going to buy a padfone, but with all their delays i havent been able to buy one.

i was at a microsoft dev camp at sky city the other day for azure and a couple of presenters were running windows 8 on similar tables and whoa, they look awesome. an actual full OS on a small device, connect up a keyboard dock and you have a full laptop. and windows 8 looks really impressive (a little odd the start orb is missing, but im sure ill get use to it).

so im sold, ill buy one (hopefully theyre out in sept/oct, going to the states then)

1) it might feel like that, but really this market is just starting
2) all of the OEMs will have product in market in NZ for the Windows 8 launch, HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, etc, it all = choice
3) MSFT hasn't announced that there won't be a 3G version. Also "almost everyone" the sales figures for wifi vs wifi/3g models don't = almost everyone. Also from the telco point of view, the amount of wifi/3g tablets that are actually activated with a SIM vs being used just on Wifi, the 3G segment is pretty tiny as a %, but again, this is about choice for customers, MSFT hasn't announced a 3G version but you can bet existing OEMs will have them on day 1

1. MS are not late to the tablet party.
2. They said that devices will be available this holiday season in US from physical MS retail stores and online MS store.
3. Almost everyone does not have a 3G tablet. 65% of users connect via WiFi only as shown below.

This is the reason I haven't bought a tablet of any sort yet. I was waiting for this convergence to give me a tablet format with laptop capability.

I don't care that others are happy with current tablet functionality, or that many think that the POINT of a tablet is not to have a laptop. It's what I want.

My tablet is wifi only, the reason being my phone is always in my pocket and i dont then need a 2nd contract.

This is the reason I haven't bought a tablet of any sort yet. I was waiting for this convergence to give me a tablet format with laptop capability.

i got the ipad 1 the day after it came out, i sold it about 4 months ago. the only thing i ever really used it for was to read comics. whenever i wanted to browse the net i always pulled out my macbook. personally i found the ipad was a cool device, but most of the time i preferred a keyboard/touchpad. there are times i would like my ipad back (im currently searching for a house to buy, and having an ipad in the car while driving around is really helpful). but would much rather have one device that can become either with a keyboard dock adapter.

having said that, im not sold on the flimsy roll out keyboard, dont think it would work on your lap. if they make a hardcase like the asus transformer, then i would buy that version.

if the surface doesnt do that, im sure another manufacturer will, probably asus, samsung or hp.

Folk want the choice of buying a Tablet with 3G (and/or LTE) connectivity.... but the majority opt for the WiFi option. Because if we can't do WiFi we can (generally) tether.

Where MS continually trips in this space is when it tries to define the hardware and doesn't follow thru the same way that a hardware manufacturer would.

MS and Google are Software entities, their bottom lines are built around the accountabilities of selling intangible products (the software). It's not something you have a physical relationship with.

Apple control the the whole experience through their single supplier line. They have to deal with the tangible things, and manage customer expectations for service and support of the hardware. A different and multi layered business model catering to hardware and software support.

MS should be leading the design direction with 'concept' products, but leave the real product; production, form-factor and functionality; up to the manufacturers whose reputations are pinned to the reliability of their support processes and the acceptability of the OS platform. The manufacturers know where the volatile hardware market is at, MS should know what the customers want the product to do.

Top markets for the concept MS, but if you want it to fly give to Acer, HP, Levono, et-al and they'll get it off the ground.

last time I looked other Tablet OSes need to reboot to install updates

My Samsung Series 7 Slate running Windows 8 Enterprise Release Preview x86-64 boots faster than my iPad1 & iPad2 from cold and do instant on too
