freitasm: You are not required to have a Live ID. Even so, what's the big deal? Tell me you don't have a Google, Twitter, LinkedIn, Bebo, MySpace or Facebook accounts?Yes but they're voluntary. I don't like being forced to do things I don't want to and shouldn't have to do. One big reason I don't like Apple.

It's optional to use your Windows live ID when you want to log in. It has it's benefits. Your web browsing history, bookmarks and other stuff syncs and stays in the cloud your account. When you log in to another Windows 8 PC anywhere in the world with your live ID connected to the internet, it will pull down your personal settings incl bookmarks and web browsing history.

I don't WANT my stuff in the "cloud" where I can't lay my hands on it. If I WANT to sync, that's a whole other thing, but I don't want to have it done just because I have a login connected to live.
Lizard1977: I installed the developer preview last year but didn't really use it much, because it seemed to crash whenever I connected to the Internet. I was quite excited for the consumer preview, hoping that the crashing issue would be solved. However it seems to still be crashing with the consumer preview version. Except that it crashes even when it's not connected to the Internet. 5 mins seems to be the maximum it will stay up. I've got "machine check exception" and "clock watchdog" errors. Quick google searches don't show much, as expected for beta software mere hours after its released. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix the crashing? My specs are pretty standard - Core i7 860 running at 2.8ghz, 4GB RAM, Radeon 5850 1GB. I've also reset my overclocking to factory settings in case it was unstable under windows 8.
It's not a major. But it would be nice to have a proper play with Windows 8 for more than 5 mins, and I don't think windows would be so unstable, even in beta mode. Any ideas?
Lizard1977: Will try the gfx drivers. Might be a dumb question, but where is event viewer in win8?

Go to control panel on the desktop, administrative tools and then event viewer. To get to full blown control panel, hover the mouse to top right corner of the screen which will bring up the 'charms' bar then click settings, then more pc settings, then general and under language click 'go to language under control panel'. once you get full contro panel loaded, right click on it on taskbar and 'pin it to taskbar' to keep it there for easy access next time.
