ended up buying the touch cover as well in Cyan. read hands of tech blogs that got to play with it yesterday at secret media briefing at MS HQ and all seem to say touch cover actually works great. will have 2 orders now going to youshop via US store but totally worth it.

Is NZ Post's YouShop service relevant for purchasing the Surface considering they have limitations regarding transporting hardware with Lithium-Ion batteries?

Step one - press windows key
Step Two - type search term

Result:
Win7 - Top Results show in sections - Programs, Control Panel, Documents, Outlook, Files. The vast majority of the time what I want is there for me to click on

Win8 - I only get app results. The vast majority of the time I have to click settings or files to get the results I want

I am struggling to think why this would have changed given the increase in screen real estate available for displaying more, not less, results. I also would've thought that this was something a large number of users do multiple times per day.

So I hope it is just something I am missing.... because it is difficult to understand the reason for the change.

Cool thanks, looks like I need to learn two additional shortcut keys where one used to do the same job.

Any idea why they made it more difficult to use? I'm assuming there is some rational explanation that escapes me.

With search and settings search I get live results as I type. For some reason the file search method requires me to press enter before I get results. Is there a method for getting live results? I don't want to have to type more than absolutely necessary... I use this many times per day.

To answer my own question as to why the change - it feels like they are trying to dumb the OS down to make it less confusing for people who tend to get confused using a computer.

I'm fine with that being the default - I understand the need to compete with other less confusing operating systems. What is needed is a setting that those of us who want all results displayed live, as with win7, can turn it back on. A full screen live result search across all categories would be an improvement rather than the backwards step we have ended up with.

They revised their conditions (see the thread about YouShop) and pretty much all phone\tablet\laptop batteries are now ok.

I have the RTM on this very computer and I am finding that having it installed I am actively using its social media sync features and calender when I cant be bothered to reach into my pocket to get out my android phone cause it's synced with my google, hotmail and facebook accounts. You can really see where the RnD went into.
The screen snap thing with the apps is total trash in my books it hasn't done anything for me so far.

As soon as I found out you could buy a neat little program(for 5 usd I might add) from Stardock called start 8 which gives you the startbutton back and the ability to boot to desktop(though it is a bit iffy) I jumped on to it, the idea that I have to put my mouse on either side of the taskbar to use the metro menus is silly as a M/K user. I found however that the emulated windows 7 menu is a tad slower than the metro one and now I have kinda just accepted the metro menu.

I haven't used the music, video, news or skydrive apps much yet but I probably should. I'm more interested whether the desktop programs I use often like VLC and steam get a metro overhaul(though it seems Valve isn't very happy with the windows 8 store's system) Whether or not I can play my games just as easy or easier on windows 8 will be the make or break for me in the end.

On another note if the start button was still there and you had the apps/programs your parents or office worker only needed on the start menu I think it could be a decent office/home basic system too. I'm gonna have to see if it rolls out images easily and can be locked down properly :L.

Im also gonna have to see if the new office apps are decent and weather or not I'm gonna upgrade to a x86 surface or a hybrid laptop decisions decisions.

I'm glad that the 26th October is nearing.... that's means that when I ring Samsung on that day they HAVE (or I would hope so!_ to offer support for my Windows 8 operating system... unlike my previous call that said they couldn't help me with THEIR application running on Windows 8, as the OS wasn't publically available.

Also, I hope Microsoft considers sending out an optional update, via Windows Update or whatever means, that allows one to go back to the Windows 7 look (i.e. have the start menu). Rather than people relying on 3rd party apps, or Samsung clients downloading their SLyauncher. It is a major overhall of the appearance, and such a quick change is likely to confuse a lot of people who are so use to the layout in Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, 98, 95. I stop there.

I've got it running on a VMWare machine mainly to test out the UI. I'm not digging it.

The clumsy mashing of the traditional desktop metaphor with the touch screen UI, just doesn't work on a desktop or non-touch device, IMO.

The Skype app looks great. Will be released on Windows 8 launch day (26th October). There are over 7000 apps now in the Windows store. There were only 500 apps in the Windows Phone marketplace when it launched. Windows store app count no doubt will touch 6 figures in less than a year with this momentum.

I've just updated my PC to Windows 8 over the weekend. So far I'm loving it.

The only issue I've encountered is a problem RDP'ing into another PC via RWW on SBS 2008/2003. I'm searching for the solution to that now.

Upgrading from Windows 7 Home professional to Win8 Pro RTM

None of the metro apps work! After messing with all the tutorials to get them working, the only option is to 'refresh' or 'reinstall' which I have time for neither, means re installing all my software so it's too much of a hassle.

Hope they get this fixed ASAP!

I may be blind as cant find anything yet, but does anyone know if you will be able to buy the upgrade and download it to burn to disk and buy 2 Activation keys. I have 2 computers I would like to upgrade and though just downloading once would be good rather than 2 large downloads

Yes you can use the same download disk on 2 machines as long as the activation/cd keys are legit and unique.
