Anyone have any thoughts on using Amahi as a home JBOD/Media server?

Currently have about 5TBs I need to take from my home PC and thinking of either getting a USB JBOD enclosure although would rather prefer a small server computer running Amahi to deal with streaming/storing and keeping my files intact. Anyone have any thoughts on what time to go for or any thoughts on Amhi I should know about,

I was going to start a new topic, but this is pretty much the same question I have. Is anyone using Amahi currently and how do they find it? Looks cool, but I'm also wondering why it's still based on Fedora 14, when Fedora 17 is the current version and 14 is no longer supported... It's a pain even finding the fedora 14 downloads.

I found Fedora 14, and have installed Amahi but that's as far as I have got atm (Saving for HDDs next)
Apparently they are working on Fedora 16 release which shouldn't be too much longer.

Thanks, yeah I found the download in the end.. the torrents don't seem to work and the first mirror I looked at it had archived it away in some unclear location. Then after a bit more looking I found it here:

I have an old (very old) PC, a couple of IDE drives and some usb drives to test with so will see how it goes ;-)

EDIT: Looks like they're working hard on the ubuntu version too.. though some of their blogs indicate that's been going on since early 2011:

Make sure you enable a desktop enviroment, I followed the instructions and had no way of running the Amahi installer, so I just installed the default install and customised the options to avoid any useless stuff

Thanks; got it up and running and started some basic testing. Looks good, but I hope they get the Ubuntu version out soon, or at least more recent fedora version... F14 is a bit of a pain; huge download, took an age to install and and seems to run like a dog compared to ubuntu 12.04 on the same hardware. Getting remote desktop and adding a gigE card after install we also a wee bit of a challenge.

Once setup it looks decent though. Greyhole seems to work as advertised, though I only have 1 120GB drive in the machine and an external 120GB added to test with for now... I'm not trusting it with all my real drives just yet ;-) I'm a bit dissapointed with write speeds to it though - seems to be maxing out at around 24MB/s; I suspect that may be because of the age of the machine I'm running it one; An old Celeron possibly isn't up to greyhole + gigE...

I'm weighing up the idea of just putting Ubuntu back on and getting greyhole, etc running on that with a bit of tinkering. The web interface is nice on Amahi though.. and I get the impression I've yet to scratch the surface on what it can do, so will give it a go for a while.

Well, I'm quite impressed with Amahi; I've decided to use it full time as my home file\media server. I must say though, greyhole is very cool, but also very slow. It's probably because of the old hardware I'm using, but getting all my files onto there is proving to be a real pain!

Good luck! :) I have a mere 1.4TB and it's a pain, lol. Though you'll undoubtedly have better than a celeron to run it on. I'm also running external usb drives as the 2 largest drives on the amahi server, which is probably a bad idea, but it's what I've got.

When you do get started, be sure to read up on greyhole more than I did. I thought moving the landing zone was very simple through the web interface, but it turns out there's a bit more to it:

Update: Well, Amahi is running pretty well. The only niggle I have with it at the moment is everything in the Amahi ecosystem seems to be out of date. I understand this is done for stability, but for example I wanted to try transmission, but it is a paid update in the Amahi app store; which I wouldn't mind paying, but it's based on version 1.9.3 which appears to be from 2010... hrm. I'm guessing I could just set it up manually but then it will still be running on fedora 14 which is also from 2010.

I may try replace it with the Ubuntu 12.04 version of amahi. Apparently you can restore your greyhole pool without copying, etc which looks good.

After a few headaches I now have an Amahi Ubuntu 12.04 box with my greyhole drives successfully transferred from the old machine (which was running with Fedora)

The headaches weren't caused by Amahi\Greyhole as such (transferring a greyhole array is actually surprisingly simple) but rather because all my Landing Zones were on /home which it turns out Fedora puts on an LVM partition - getting that mounted in Ubuntu was a bit of fun :)

Done now, up and running and this is looking very nice. Bearing in mind that the hardware it's running on still isn't exactly cutting edge, I'm now getting downloads from the server @100MB/s and uploads around 60MB/s.
