Hi there,

I am trying to install RealVNC on Linux. I downloaded VNC for Linux Generic installer 32-bit, and extracted the files to the 'Document's folder. However, it seems that double clicking and executing the vncinstaller file won't do. I suspect it is a series of commands in the terminal.

So: what commands do I need to write to install VNC Server, and set a password to connect to the computer?

I tried running "rpm -Uvh vnc-server-5.0.5.rpm" (from http://www.walkernews.net/2007/07/05/how-to-setup-linux-vnc-server/) (rpm wasn't installed, so I installed it). But then running the same command said it couldn't find the file. Guess it wasn't pointing to the right folder to install it from?

How personally attached to RealVNC are you? Cos there's some very nice alternative VNC's you can install from the Lubuntu Package Manager.

PS: Nice to see you taking Lubuntu for a test drive. I love the LXDE desktop and absence of compiz which has become quite the resource hog.

zANavAShi: How personally attached to RealVNC are you? Cos there's some very nice alternative VNC's you can install from the Lubuntu Package Manager.

If the alternative can also run as a VNCViewer on my Windows 8 laptop, then by all means I'm happy to give that application a go.

It's been a while since I had use for VNC myself, but I was persuaded by some excellent reviews to switch from RealVNC to TightVNC (the source code issue was a clincher) at the time. As far as I can tell from current TightVNC reviews it's still holding it's ground as a top performer.

Server is in the Lubuntu package manager, windoze client is here: http://www.tightvnc.com/

tbh you're better off installing .debs in any Ubuntu based distro like Lubuntu. Follow this guide here to get a vnc server up and running - https://wiki.edubuntu.org/Lubuntu/RemoteDesktop

Support a locally made Linux based Operating System, try Linux Lite.

With this option would I open TightVNC on my Windows machine and connect to the Lubuntu machine using the IP 192.168.1.9:22 ? (192.168.1.9 is the address the machine is assigned)

try 192.168.1.9:1 or 192.168.1.9:5900

If I am only installing using the commands:

sudo at-get install openssh-server vino -y

then

vino-preferences (and configuring to my needs)

upon restart, will I connect to the server using 192.168.1.9:22

(indicated in the instructions is to set up the forwarding of port 22 in the router)

I plan on connecting to the Linux machine whilst at home, and not using another Internet connection.

ssh client connects to port 22. It should also create a tunnel that terminates on pot 5900 for the vnc viewer to use.
