I am setting up a mail server at present for an ISP.

2 software packages I have used for many years - Amavis-New and SpamAssassin, have not been updated with a new release for over 2 years now.

Amavis-New is giving an error on startup suggesting it's code with be unusable as-is soon.

Spam Assassin release refuses to compile with a recent Perl so I have to use trunk.

What can I replace thee with if this is needed?

I came across Rspamd a while ago, haven't had a chance to test it myself yet but it might be worth a shot.

Thanks for that. I have to press ahead with Amavis + Spam Assassin right now. I invoke these separately - Amavis for virus scanning and Spam Assassin as an LDA between Postfix and Dovecot - because otherwise this project will drag on a lot longer.

I have already spent several hours migrating out from pain points in the customer mail accounts setup databases, the sort of stuff which was included for backwards compatibility over 19 years. But clients on this new mail server will have a fresh base. They can keep their email (of course) but they otherwise will have to conform to all the new requirements like a new username format and compulsory SASL and TLS. There will no longer be an option to bypass spam filtering, though they can adjust the settings via webmail.

In addition, it's better I test this out on my own server before deploying it for a bunch of customers.

But thanks for that. I will definately look into it. Hopefully it will also cut down on the time involved in installing the 101 Perl modules SA needs.

I had a quick read but didn't find anything about virus scanning. Can it interface to ClamAV, etc, or will I continue to need to use Amavis for this?

Yes it does.

My best guess for the lack of development for Amavis/SA is most users have either moved to paid providers or more modern technologies.

Yes it does.

Great. Thanks for that. I will take a breather after this current server install (which is directly responsible for 3 late nights so far) and try that out on my server.

If you're using either Ubuntu or Debian (which I assume you're not - as I believe you're into RHEL based distros or Slackware) then there is an automated installer for a secure email server with spam filtering, a control panel for management and also SPF, DKIM, DMARC out of the box too. It is really quite good, is using only opensource components and prevents mucking around. Take a look: https://mailinabox.email/

To be perfectly honest going for a solution like this is often far far easier (and more secure in most instances) than rolling out your own especially when it comes to email. They've got a discussion forum also with quite an active community.

This is why, personally, I use Debian for any servers on the net - they're much much quicker to work with than RHEL based distros and often have a much better out of the box experience with any software.
