Hi I have Ubuntu installed on an old Pentium 400Mhz with 128Mb of RAM.

I need software to play slideshows of photos (like iPhoto would) - can someone please suggest something free and useful?

I want to display a bunch of photos to a relative on the laptop screen (fullscreen).

Hi,

random as it may sound, create a presentation in open office? aka powerpoint! Otherwise just flicking through the ubuntu software list, maybe kview, fspot or even upload them to Flickr and run them from the web full screen?

For those interested it was 6.10.

It seems later Ubuntu versions had inbuilt screen savers which you could default to your pictures folder.

Which would be fine until 6.10 wouldn't recognise 2 USB drives I inserted (or at least would not auto-mount).

I gave up. Am installing Windows 2000 as we speak and will drag the Windows XP screensaver to this laptop.

I need a solution that "just works" :p

OpenOffice.org Impress has been mentioned.
OpenOffice.org Draw also has a slide show option...

ImageMagick has a number of tools including a slideshow support.
Simple example...

$ display -delay 500 *.jpg

This will display a slideshow of all *.jpg files in a folder with 5 seconds delay.

Plus there is Google Picasa for Linux - http://picasa.google.com/linux/ - this also has a slideshow mode.

Haven't had any problems with USB memory with Debian 4.0 (or 5.0 now) on my IBM T41 Thinkpad... I just plug them in and they mount and appear on my desktop (using Gnome desktop) so I'm guessing your pc might be a bit like my old stone age Compaq Deskpro with flaky USB interfaces?

Not sure which version of Ubuntu you use, but the Ubuntu guys always seem to include at least one photo viewer prog. that does slideshows well. Maybe gThumb?
