Linux skills are limited to copy/paste so excuse any dumb questions I come up with.
I have installed Mint on an old EliteDesk and then used the Software Manager to install Jellyfin. So far all good, I can connect to the Jellyfin server over my lan.

Because the server will be running "headless" I wanted Jellyfin to autostart when the server is booted. The method I followed gave a "Unit jellyfin.service not found" probably because it was using Ubuntu, not Mint.

Is there a simple way to make Jellyfin autostart on boot or do I need to start again and install Ubuntu?

Thanks

I can't imagine it's hard to write a systemd file for this but it depends if you want it to start rootless (so upon user login) or as root (which is slightly dangerous but possibly needed due to hardware acceleration). I also don't know how the Software Manager on Linux Mint works, is it just debian packages or snap or it's own hell? Where is the Jellyfin binary?

If you do ls '/usr/bin/ | grep jellyfin' (remove the ticks) what is your output?

FWIW I have Jellyfin in a LXC container via Proxmox and this works amazingly well. And Linux Mint is almost like Debian, and Ubuntu has Debian like qualities, so I don't think you were on the wrong path, it just may not have created a systemd file so your command just failed(because it doesn't exist).

Okay, I did some googling they are Flatpaks so yes they won't appear there.

Does Jellyfin show up in the applications menu (the start menu) and does Linux Mint have the option to autostart applications in the settings area?
This would be the easiest way to do this. Command line should be last resort.

Yes it does show up in the applications menu, not seeing anything about autostart options though.

Easiest way would be to get ChatGpt to walk you through setting up a systemd service for this. Its pretty good at that kind of task.

Another alternative is to use docker and run Jellyfin's docker container instead. Hardware acceleration doesnt work though so if thats needed its probably a non starter.

Where did you find this option?
