I wonder if anyone here tried Moblin 2.0 yet? Will it boot from a USB memory key? Also, is there a way to have Live Ubuntu from a USB key? I have an external DVD drive but is so much easier to go the USB key way...

I have an HP Mini Mi. This is the U.S. version, one with the custom Ubuntu Linux made for HP.

This just answers the Live Ubuntu from USB key question. Going to download the ISO now and try it.

Still wanting any comments on Gobling 2.0.

Both work from a USB key, but they require a byte-level copy of the iso/img to the usb key.

I've hacked the initrd of moblin so it'll boot via grub on the (fat) usb key I have, since I have a lot of bootable utils on it already, and I wanted to add moblin to it. I'll be doing Ubuntu next :)

Yep, just tried Ubuntu 9.04 from a USB key, worked well, recognised all hardware, so I took the plunge and installed it, replacing the original HP Linux - which was too dark and the launcher didn't have a desktop, etc.

Now I am thinking: should I have installed the Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix instead?

What do you think?

I haven't tried ubuntu in a while, and I've only just downloaded the remix - it'll be a day or so before I get the initrd munged around a bit :)

I'd go with whatever you're comfortable with using - grab the remix image, and give it a go on the usb key the same way. that way you can compare and decide which you like better.

Tried Ubuntu NR, all works fine except sound and mic (http://tinyurl.com/pqg4x9).

So I guess it's back to the HP Ubuntu Linux distro then...

Moblin 2 is fine. Pretty slick, actually.

One of the images I used was the regular .img file. Just point KVM to it & off you go.

Depending on how you DL it, you may have to either dd it, or use a tool like UNetBootIn to create a boot disk. I've had some sports with the 9.04 bootdisk-creator. I use UNet quite a bit, since it doesn't format the drive before loading the data.
Makes it safe to use on other devices, like an iPod (I've made my iPod a live-boot USB drive)

in your case, you may be better off simply runing the or off the flash drive
