I have recently got around to installing Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10 on my Netbook [Never touched linux before, always used Microsoft], and was wondering if:

A) It is possible to modify GRUB so that I can select a Windows Logo to boot Windows XP and select an Ubuntu logo to launch Ubuntu, instead of a text based menu.
and
B) Remove the options for Memtest from the boot menu.

I'm happy to give anything a go.

A) You can change you bootloader to something like

althought thats (in retro 90's quality)

Did you install grub2 as your boot loader, this has a graphical option.

B)

as long as you make a back up of it you can manually edit the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file

A) Recent versions of Ubuntu use Grub2 which support themes, I haven't used them myself but it sounds promising - http://grub.enbug.org/ThemeFormat this page has a screenshot using grub with icons and text.

B) To remove memtest rather than editing /boot/grub/grub.cfg (edits to this file will get overwritten) you want to run the commands:

sudo chmod a-x /etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+
sudo update-grub2

The first command makes the memtest config file non-executable, and the second command regenerates grub.cfg. the update-grub2 command uses config files in /etc/grub.d to create /boot/grub/grub.cfg and will only use them if they are executable.

as for A not too sure exactly, i feel as if i have read/seen that you can. you may just have to keep digging.

In the end I used Grub Customizer to disable unwanted OSs, and I managed to setup a a splash image with this guide. Ultimately I would like a boot menu that looks something like this, but for now I'm happy. Thanks for the help everyone!
