I don't think I have booted into windows in over six months - and even when I did it was only t use skype because the linux skype client was a bit flaky.

Yes I think I will be one of the people who doesn't use windows if possible. It is just my choice. This is because of the hatred that has slowly grown over the years with frustration, inefficiency, and just shear grunt that is required by Windows just to bring up a blank screen so you can start programs.

WinNT wasn't so bad, but for me it just went downhill from there....

I used NT4 way into XP days - but support for that ended in 2005 (!).

A dislike of Windows is not the reason I use Opensuse. I use it because it suites me and is a very good operating system. I do think that Windows 7 is a very good os. I actually like Win7 more than Ubuntu. I'm not much of an Ubuntu fan because I don't like Gnome so much.

No, I'm not a Gnome fan in any form.
Not to say it's no good (it has many fans so must be OK) - just I prefer KDE by a long way.
It's not surprising that Linus Trovalds would criticise Gnome as he has always made it clear that he is a KDE fanboy.

As for Ubuntu using Unity - that is basically just a themed up gnome shell??

Back in 2005, Linus Torvalds was a big fan of KDE, but had a change of heart after KDE 4.0, which he called a "disaster", he ditched KDE and started using GNOME 2. He now uses Xfce:

Regarding Unity Desktop, it still uses the GTK+ applications - no need to reinvent the wheel - so you can call it a shell for GNOME if you want. However, to call it "theme" for GNOME, suggests you can just select "Unity" as a theme, which of course, isn't the case.

I guess it depends what you are looking for. I tend to get annoyed with a desktop environment that tries to be too clever, or with developers that think a phone interface is a good idea for a desktop with a widescreen monitor, keyboard and mouse. GNOME and Unity 3D seem to have headed too far along that path at the moment.

yes, KDE 4.0 was a complete disaster (should have been called a beta) but we are now up to 4.8.xx and it has become a very stable and mature desktop.

Because it not compatible with missus 1.0.

That’s why I run a separate PC for the family. Kids come home with homework etc ... Ubuntu does not cut it.

Don't get me wrong I love Linux, particularly Ubuntu. I use it daily.

Great for me however, OCTAVE (a open source port of MATLAB) only really works on linux, and obviously any scripting duties work well on ubuntu. I keep my windows partition for said missus 1.0, for the few win apps I have (games!!), and obviously it's useful to test windows programs on windows (funnily enough)
