Personally I use a mixture of Arch + Debian on all my servers. On my Laptop I dual-boot with ElementryOS.

openSUSE
Best KDE integration of any linux OS. Very polished and solid.
Yast is another strong-point - excellent software and system maintenance.

Has been my sole OS for about eight to ten years now.

Work: Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Out of curiosity I just checked a sample of our machines for uptime and longest I see are a pair of RHEL 5.4 servers up 1041 and 1032 days. They'll almost certainly reach 3 years uptime but won't make it to 4 - a routine hardware replacement with RHEL6 installed will be their fate.

Home: both my laptops boot Fedora 20, Xfce spin.

Do you mind me asking what laptops you use?

I currently have an old Dell XPS M1330 which is overdue for replacement; the last (newer) laptop I tried putting Fedora on was not a success because of too much graphics jiggerpokery. So I'm looking for a recent model laptop - preferably with 4 core cpu - that isn't going to have the same issues.

Sorry, I can't help with suggestions for a recent model laptop good for Fedora or other Linux distributions. All mine are at least 4 or 5 years old and bought 2nd hand. I like to keep things until they are no longer fit for purpose, and the laptops are working just fine.

FWIW, on KubuntuForums.net there's a very knowledgeable guy who says Lenovo are the best laptops for Linux support.

As for me, using ElementaryOS. Seems to perform very well and to me is visually appealing. The only thing I don't like is not being able to put icons on the desktop, apart from that its great and should be even better when Isis comes along.

I've been using plain old Ubuntu. I've found it has just worked better than any other distro I've tried on the HP laptop I want *nix on. I've tried quite a few, including openSUSe which was just plain terrible on an older laptop.

yes, as a long time openSUSE user I would never ever recommend it as a distro to give a spin on some older hardware that is lying around.
The default KDE/openSUSE install is quite a comprehensive desktop that, just like windows, requires a reasonably modern computer.
As a rule of thumb - if it wont run Windows 7 well then it probably wont run openSUSE 12.xx or higher very well.

that has certainly been my experience.
HP are possibly the worst.

That laptop shipped with Windows 7 and runs it fine. openSUSE just didn't seem well suited for the screen aspect ratio and the hardware itself. It was just [subjectively] hard to use, and laggy. On the other hand even the wife finds Ubuntu easy to use on the same laptop, and she struggles with an xbox controller. :-)

Been playing with Mint on a VM, and seriously tempted to install it on my fathers PC - found an XP theme for it, he wont really notice the difference ;)

If I can pick up another HDD cheap somewhere, might dual boot it on my PC.

Inphinity: CentOS

+1 for CentOS.

In my experience Ubuntu is not polished and has lots of bugs and Linux Mint has no upgrade path.

Manjaro KDE - switched from Windows when I had a build a new PC earlier in the year. Figured it was worth a try and no regrets at all.

Manjaro appealed for the rolling updates, and the solid software repos. Has been spot on so far.
