never tried kde plasma, i tried kde 3, and it was surprisingly good, then i tried kde 4 and it was terrible.  i imagine it's improved since then though.  (it was real early kde4)  is plasma light weight?

KDE4 is KDE plasma. (I think officially KDE 4 plasma workspaces)
KDE4 was terrible when first released but it has now evolved into a very nice and mature desktop.
I'm currently using release 4.9.5

Gnome3 seems to be going through the same pains as KDE4 did in its early days.

I've been thinking about trying KDE for a couple of weeks. Currently I have Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity, Gnome Shell and Cinnamon (I like to switch between desktop environments, I have a tendency to jump between distros and this seems to lower the urge. Change is as good as a holiday they say.. It's just easier). I didn't like the early version of KDE, although you could see it was headed in a good direction. The thing that gets me is if you install it from within Ubuntu you get all the bits and pieces that come with it and it tends to clutter up the menus, especially in Cinnamon.
