Our (aging?) MBP is finally showing problems, but it's an annoying and seemingly trivial one. The magsafe charging port has burn marks around a couple of pinholes. Obviously the connection has been loose in the past and has sparked often. Now it's not charging properly with any charger. The most annoying thing is the rest of the unit is still perfectly fine. I'm guessing this is probably quite a common problem. If that's the case, what can be done about this? Is it economical to fix the unit?

Cheers,
Dany.

Haven't tried that - we don't have isopropyl alchohol... will 95% ethanol do the trick?

Something that will clean the gunk off, not leave residue, and not do any cosmetic damage to the case...

I have noticed with these machines that over time the magsafe port can move slightly. Have a look and make sure their is no gap between the magsafe port and the casing, if there is the port has moved and you are no longer getting contact between the the adaptor and port.

Your Apple service provider can easily fix this or you could give it a go at your own risk.

Just a thought... but if you're still on the original battery (unlikely) it may be that it has stopped accepting a charge. If you click on the icon in the status bar you should get an option to check its condition.
