hi everyone
just a query ive now moved onto a MacBook and been looking for a program that I can convert and burn avi files to dvd? ive been searching around but cant find one i like.
any suggestions or help will be appreciated:-)

I'm assuming that your Mac came with iLife, so therefore (depending on the avi format) iDVD should do what you are after, as long as you can play the video in QuickTime.

If not, Perian is worth downloading to enable playing of most video formats.

hmmm not sure about iLife but i know theres an idvd -
i downloaded the codecs so now i can play the avi files on quicktime
ill play around with it tonight and see how it works
i checked out the link for that perian looks alright but it doesnt say i can convert and burn from avi to dvd?

iDVD uses QuickTime to convert the files to DVD format to allow them to be burnt. What this means is that if QuickTime can play it, it can be burnt to DVD.

Another burning option I use is Toast, which also burns CDs etc, and has advantages and disadvantages. Other than that there are a number of burning tools available. Have a look at http://osx.iusethis.com/.

ive heard of toast what is it exactly?
ill try burning one tonight using idvd - i would never have used it as i dont know what it does exactly lol

Also check out Flip4Mac - there should be a link on the microsoft mac site (http://www.microsoft.com/mac)

The initial version you download is free for playback, and for a smallish fee (I can't recall as I haven't checked it out for a while) you will have a version that does the encoding as well.

Also - depending on the format of your AVI's there may be free / alternate encoders for the mac (APC Mag had some DiVX codecs on their cover DVD not so long ago)

Lastly - this is all upon the assumption that you want to actually create a DVD video disc - if you have a player that will playback the AVI's in the format you currently have, there should be nothing to stop you putting the raw AVI files directly on the disc itself.

Note - the Apple drives do not support writing to DVD-RAM, I have successfully read from a DVD-RAM disc, but no altering can happen.

YAY! i just finished burning an avi file to dvd using idvd works perfectly BUT the only problem i have is that it will only let me burn one movie on a 4gig disc which i can normally burn 4movies on with my xpwindows.

if anyone can help me find a way to put 4movies on one disc using idvd or another program ill be SOOOO GREATFUL:-)

I do hope these are movies that you are legally entitled to. (Format shifting is something I'm still unclear on for NZ, and is a different topic).

You will need to investigate the options that your windows software allows. There must be some options or similar in the software to allow you to compress the video further (or alternatively, strip what you don't need).

Bear in mind that as you adjust to bigger and bigger visual output devices you will notice the reason that the compression is set as it currently is.

ok - i jst finished downloading toast titanium8 - now im going to play around with it and see how this thing works if anyone has any good tips for me and things not to do - flick them through:-)

iDVD will convert the movie so that it will play in any standard DVD player. If you just want to burn the files to a DVD, then either Toast will do it, or you can use the Finder (right click and select new burn folder, copy your files into it and go from there...

ok so i can burn more than one avi file onto a dvd disc using idvd? - i tried it but kept telling me theres not enough space? but the disc is 4.7gigs?
im hoping this will work on toast....

With toast ye can fit about 120mins of avi on there.

It's why I said 'about' and not 'exactly'. Depending on compression that figure will change.

OK so if i compress my avi files will this affect its quality when i burn them? if this is the only way to do it whats the best compression software? grrrrrr
