Followed the instructions on the Apple website about wiping the disk through the recovery options (Command+R). However, now that I've wiped the disk, when I enter recovery again, all I get is an option to connect to a WiFi network. Once I do this, the screen is just stuck on the network name with a spinning globe on top of it.

I have tested by creating another Open network SSID with no security but still no go.

Any advice? Thank.

Try using Ethernet. I've found Wi-Fi to be very slow for OS X recovery.

Personally I tend to create a flash drive (Apple supplies a tool called createinstallmedia for this) so that no Internet connection is required.

Boot into Internet Recover Mode (rather than Std recovery mode) by holding down Command+Option+R - once you select you network the spinning globe will pop up and it will boot into the installer via the internet. Note that it takes a while (depending on your network speed) and can often look like it's doing nothing for ages, just leave it and it will get them eventually

Thanks. I don't have an ethernet adapter. Will read up about that tool. Not sure I have another option right now except for internet recovery though since the disk has been wiped.

I had a similar issue. Googled it and someone suggested finding a stronger wifi signal. So moved it closer to wifi . Started at the beginning and worked. Phew

All good. Getting a friend to assist in creating a bootable installer: https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT201372

Thanks.
