Dec 2010 17" MacBook Pro recently I updated hard drive to a SSD 1TB and installed ELCapitan.  The Apple OS works fine.

I have always run windows 7 in Boot Camp.  I have tried to install Windows 7 but it will not gather all the updates.  When running windows the computer often crashes especially when the charger cable is removed.

I would update to windows 10 but this computer is listed as not suitable.

I would be most grateful for recommendations on to what to do or who to take it too to sort.

Thank you very much,  ,Where should I store these updates as I have tried similar links and the updates don't seem to go to the right place for Windows to recognise there are there to be installed.

For Windows 7 you'll have to install this update manually to fix Windows Updates: KB3172605

My order of installing Win7 on a computer now is as follows:

1. KB3020369 - This will update the Windows update system from a new install to allow for the installation of the update pack from MS

2. Convenience Pack Win7 32bit / Win7 x64

3. KB3172605

That'll get you pretty upto date and should allow windows updates to continue working.  The Simplix Pack isnt a bad download/install either.

Thank you very much for the reply , all updates are installed for windows 7,  however when I check for updates nothing happens as before. Also computer oftens turns off like its run out of power after 5 minutes when runn9ng on batteries.

This doesn't happen when running on the MAC OS. Do you have any ideas where I could start to fix this problem??

thank you  Don

Yep check the windows event log. Any shutdown initiated by the operating system is recorded there. There is usually enough information about the shutdown reason to under why it occured and fix.
