I do not use Mac Mail, I use Spark.

However, that does not seem to stop mail ending up in Mail all the same.

The OS keeps warning me that my disk is nearly full. There is almost 3Gb taken up with Mail.

If I delete mail from Mail, will it delete it everywhere or just in Mail? ie will I still be able to read it in Spark?

What do you mean you use Spark?

Do you mean you use an Xtra email address?

You must have the email account set up in Mail too. Just open Mail, go to the Account settings and either turn off or remove the account. Or if it's iCloud, go to Settings > iCloud and turn off the Mail button.

Whether deleting in Mail will delete from Spark too depends on what account it is (iCloud eg) and how the server is added to the clients (IMAP eg). Best option just to remove the account from Mail, and then once it's gone if you have any mail left in the app just delete it. That way it only deletes locally and there's no server for the changes to sync to.

That'll be the easiest.

If the mail account's 'Incoming Mail Server' in your local Apple Mail app is configured as "POP" then you should be OK to delete as POP downloads the email from the server and stores locally on your HDD. There will be a setting in your mail account to 'remove copy from server after retrieving a message'. If unticked it *should* be keeping a copy of email on the server but storing GB's of emails remotely and accessing via POP is really inefficient as is continually having to figure out what it has and hasn't already downloaded. If that sync gets corrupted at either end then it'll re-download ALL email again and duplicate all your emails which isn't pretty. You can check the status of what's stored on the server by logging in via your provider's webmail system.

If it's "IMAP" then it loads dynamically from the server just like webmail except using your own app's interface. So if you delete an email from your inbox that is configured as IMAP it is deleted from the server as well.

A couple of quick fixes regardless of type of connection that might help very short term to free up space: Empty your Trash and have a good purge of your sent folders. The sent folder can sneak up on you as stores everything you have ever sent if you don't regularly clean it out. If that's too daunting sort your sent emails by size and delete the ones with larger attachments or just all the emails with attachments. Obviously remember to empty your Trash again.

Also if the account is created by a Profile (typical Exchange account, e.g.), you need to delete the Profile. Find it in Settings > General > Profiles, near the bottom of General. Tap on it, and delete it.

Personally I would just delete the entire iOS Mail account. How to Delete an Email Account on an iPhone and just stick with Spark Mail.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I seem to have managed to clear out some of it so thanks for the suggestions! There seemed to be thousands of old emails (literally) in various folders created by SaneBox.

Check your accounts connected with macOS by going to System Preferences then Internet Accounts.
