I bought a new 3GS and tried tethering. I got it going through USB easily enough, but following the instructions for USB I couldn't figure out. I turned on tethering and connected through USB and went to the Mac OS X network preferences, it says to select it on the network menu but it isn't there. How do I do this?

HI, It is better to set up the tethering through bluetooth. Pair the two devices (presumably the OS x device has Bluetooth).

This should add a bluetooth modem to your network settings (to access this go the icon for the bluetooth or wifi at the top and select network preferences), it should be there along with ethernet, wifi, and some others. You can use OS X to manually dial the network connection (used with broadband stick, or can turn it on in the iphone (settings/network/Internet tethering/On

This is presuming a number of things, if it doesn't work you will nered to be more specific with your circumstances (eg. make/model/year of mac, os x version, sim provider etc).

I have it working through Bluetooth, but am just curious as to why I can't get it going through USB :( I have Snow leopard

I am on holiday in Queenstown now, and so have been trying to figure out this tethering now that I need it. I have been doing it via bluetooth. I turned my macbook on into Windows 7, plugged it in and it installed drivers. And just like that, I'm tethering and It is significantly faster than bluetooth tethering.

Every time I plug in my iPhone into Snow Leopard I get a iTunes error. When I disable tethering I don't get this error. The error I think is E8600062 or something... I will double check next time I'm in Mac. Hopefully it's not a matter of reinstalling iTunes. I'll just wait for the next iTunes update.

Semi related question

I get speed tests around 1mb when running from speedtest app from iphone

But when I tether I get far slower speeds, around 100kb max

I have tried on 2 separate laptops, what is causing the giant speed difference?

Perhaps you need to remove the bluetooth connection, before attempting to install the usb connection? I have a 3gs and 2009 macbook and both the usb and bluetooth tether work fine for me...

Not sure why you would see a difference. Two thoughts though:

1. You need to confirm that the measure of the speedtests are on the same units little b for bits, big B for Bytes (8 bits).

2. If you are tethering the iphone by BT, you may be saturating the connection, try USB, as the bandwidth in BT in most stacks is usually optimised for small data transfers, to save battery power (there are also limitations in the technology that limit throughput to 3Mb/s or 375kB/s maximum presumably this is a burst speed, not sustained).

3. If you are running speedtest on the iphone while tethered, the software is likely limiting the availability of connection speed, as presumably you would prefer to browse quickly on the tethered device?
