Hi, I have quite a few questions for any Mac experts out there as I am a Mac noob.  I have a 1yr old MBP, OSX 10.6.8.

1.  I ran Onyx and it froze during deletion of Trash.  Had to force shutdown the machine (not good for it I know).  Then I ran Disk Utility and it came up "Macintosh HD volume was found corrupt" and told me to reinstall the OS from the installation disk.

I haven't got the installation disk and someone on another thread told me to download OS X Lion as it has a Recovery function that you will be able to do a fresh install after you create a bootable OS X Lion using a USB stick? Would this be the best option?  How big would the stick have to be?  I have an 8GB one.

2.  Also when I start my machine for a while now 3 pop-ups say "/Library/StartupItems/HWNetManager","/Library/StartupItems/HWPortDetect","/Library/StartupItems/StartOuc" have not been started because they do not have the proper security settings.

I back up using Time Machine back-ups but read that to be really safe I should use SuperDuper too.  But these messages never go away even though I just downloaded the 10.6.8 update and I don't know how to fix them.

3.  I've been having trouble with my Airport connecting to my Thomson T585v7 router and I read on the net that OS X Lion has a few Airport problems.  What should I do?

The install disc would have been in the box with the Mac when you purchased it. As you don't have the disc the option to buy 10.7 through the App store would be one way to go.
There is an article here http://lifehacker.com/5823096/how-to-burn-your-own-lion-install-dvd-or-flash-drive that outlines how to move the installer to a USB stick.

This article https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3194296?start=0&tstart=0 suggests that these programs are all related to a Huawei mobile data stick that has been installed on the Mac.

Hi Oldhat, Ok have downloaded Lion but when I right click on the installer in my apps folder nothing happens. Where can I find "show package contents"? Am following the instructions in the link you gave me.

Thanks for your help!

Edit:  Am looking everywhere on the web and can't find anything except for maybe its not a package? I will persevere.

Hi,

Got the snow leopard install disk and did a clean install. Now when I ran Onyx maintenance app tonight it came up that my Start Up volume needed repair again! So I did a clean install again and am running Onyx. First it couldn't find System Events.app, which I found out is in /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder on the web. Why can't it find this all of a sudden? And Onyx has been running 'rebuild maintenance' for hours now and I'm worried.

Is my hard-drive on the way out? My MacBookPro is only a year old! How can this be?

Thanks.

Not all hard drives are created equal. It certainly does sound like something hard drive related.
Is your mac warranty still valid? Or, more specifically, is your hard drive warranty still valid?

Hi, thanks for replying!

I don't know about the warranty but I'll try and find out. Onyx is still running maintenance, is this normal even after a clean install? :(

I wouldn't have the foggiest, sorry. Macs are not my forte. But if it's anything like the Windows disk checking utility, it will take some time to check for potential issues as it is probably doing a fairly thorough analysis of the disk. Maybe there is an option for it to attempt to automatically fix disk errors when it finds them?

If it is anything to do with the hard drive, be prepared to have your computer "in the shop" potentially for two weeks. My friend's mac hard drive recently gave out and it was just over two weeks for them to get it back. This is probably due, in no small part, to the worldwide hard drive shortage as a consequence of the Thailand flooding.
