mikerussellnz: I bought a refurb previous model 15 inch MBPR just after the hardware revision bump and saved about $800. It's a great machine and I can recommend the refurb products, apart from the plain packaging everything looked like new.

I have a LG panel, no issues with image retention. You might want to check the dates of the posts about retention issues, there were issues with the first generation LG panels, but that may have been fixed in the SJA2 panels that started shipping last Jan. My panel is a SJA2.

Is the SJA2 on the command line check or is that labelled externally on the machine?

There was a thread on my Yahoo iPad forum about refurbs, a key issue is the extensive testing they get, that the new ones don't get, which is a good thing

jarledb: If you are fine with none-retina and a smaller screen - the Air is actually quite a nice machine. Used to have the MBP 2010 and updated to a 13" Macbook Air with top specs in 2013. Could not have been happier.

The MBPRetina does have 16GB of RAM as an option, but if that is outside of your price range then you really should take a good long look at the Air.

My issue was the reduced size of the webpage, but side by side to a 15 there is extremely little size difference, so thats ok. Im quite keen on an Air, smaller form factor and good battery life, and I'd get the 1.7 too. Its just a coffee tanle laptop essentially, anything demanding like video conversion, etc, if it takes longer, no issue

For students, you need a student ID. For teachers / admin staff you need either an ID or a purchase order on letterhead (the education establishment may already have an account with Apple or a reseller). Either way it needs to be from a recognised educational establishment, not just some fly-by-night place pretending to be one.

Others who can often get discount are Government departments, military, hospitals, and registered non-profit / chartiable organisations.

But ask at whichever shop you're planning to buy from what their specific requirements to qualify are.

The discount is not a huge amount on the low-end equipment. You can check the prices yourself on Apple's Education webstore (there's a link on the main webstore for education users listed under "More Stores" on the left-hand side, just below the Refurbished & Clearance link) - you do not need to log in to browse the prices.

There's (almost) nothing labelled on the outside of Apple equipment ... unlike many Windows PC (especially in the past) virtually wallpapered with silly stickers all over them.

I wouldn't try that unless you're legitimately eligible for the discount.

It's been a while since I had to do an education order, but last time I did they actually contacted you to confirm your eligibility before processing it, which included needding to fax / emailing through a copy of your ID or whatever.

More recently I had to install the education discount version of Adobe CS, which also required you to email a photo of your ID and wait for a confirmation email in return.

In today's Weekend Herald, PBTech are advertising this Waitangi Day Special (valid 6 - 9 February, 2014) ...

It doesn't say if that's their "cash price" or if you can get it slightly cheaper if paying in cash.

Checking lcd manufacturer and model is through the command line. No physical way to know.

As I said above, Apple does check for education (and other) discount qualification ... whether it's everyone or randomly is a different question.

Adobe certainly check EVERY person trying to install the Education version of their applications.
