gzt: Also running Sophos, but just started having problems with it this morning. There are not a high number of users so less random information around when things go wrong. Sophos forum might be helpful. Yet to try it.
Iirc I may have run Avast on other osx machines but removed due to a performance hit mainly due to age of machine I suspect.
I joined and posted on the Sophos forum, but no clear answers or troubleshooting steps appeared. A development manager did drop by to mention the issue I reported is is an area in which improvements are planned in future.
For now I have switched to Avast. No generalised performance issues yet.
A full scan completed in a couple of hours. At least 2x speed of Sophos scan.
