Where do we get a SATA cable for a macbook from?

It is worth a try.

If the battery is knackered then the MacBook will perform poorly, whether connected to power or not.

You need to replace the battery.

Thanks,
I was fast coming to that conclusion.

The performance is similar from the USB to the HDD

I will source a new battery next week and hopefully that will resolve my issues.

Thanks to everyone for your assistance.

Regards
John

I have seen a huge amount of MacBook Pros with faulty HDD cables that cause the machine to run slow and eventually lead to the HDD becoming corrupt.

Yes very common for 13inch macbook pros 2009 - 2011

But in this situation, its likely to be your battery. You can probably test it running it through the mains with battery disconnected/removed
