What about windows resizing don't you like? There are a few apps that might be able to help you get what you want. Like Cinch..

In Windows and Linux, if I maximize a window, it takes up the whole screen but leaves the title bars, window controls and the taskbar visible. If I hit the yellow + in OSX, it either expands to a fixed width but not fullscreen, or expands to fill the screen like F11 does in Windows. The full expand covers the dock and the top bar with the menu's in it which you then have to mouse up to the top of the screen to show again. Cheers, will look at bettertouchtool and cinch.
Probably best to try remember some key combo's too. There seems to be a lot of functionality in key combos.

The green button can have 2 options. When you hover over it you will either get;

2 arrows going away from each other, this will take you into fullscreen mode.
+, This will maximise the window.

If the 2 arrows show you can tell the system to use maximise instead by holding down the option key on the keyboard when clicking on the green button.

Cool, thanks very much, will check it out. Looked again last night, the window sizing buttons have changed a bit in El Capitan. Will check the option keys with resizing too.

I switched back in 2009, after swearing I would NEVER use a Mac. I just love how stable OSX is compared to most of the Windows versions I've used. I do have issues with the way Apple tries to manage your stuff their way, but I've gotten around that by creating referenced iTunes libraries and using third-party apps for my photos. I am using a 2008 Mac Pro, which belonged to my late husband. He used it for music recording so also bought the 30" cinema display to go with it. I've added a load more RAM to it - it's has 14GB now (I know, a weird amount, but was trying to bring it up to 12GB and when I went to install the extra I discovered 2GB in there that wasn't being recognised because the retailer we got it from installed it in the wrong configuration). I also installed a wireless card (they didn't come native when the machine launched) and a SSD as my boot drive. I have 1TB SATA drives in the other 3 bays (one is a bootable clone of the main drive, the others are for music/video/photo storage). I find it plenty snappy for what I need - I run it as a PLEX server to the HTPC downstairs, and also have it connected to an external sound mixing unit (which was hubby's) and via that to a home theatre amp for music listening. It's an old machine but I reckon as long as nothing major breaks down it should serve me well for several more years.

I went to a friend's place this morning to give her, and to install, a printer we don't use. When I got there, I found she had a Mac laptop. Panic - because I had literally never touched a Mac before. Closest I have got is using an iPad - which compared to the Mac OS I guess is like comparing drafts to chess.

Dived in anyway - she is non-tech and I'm sort of semi-tech but she showed me a few basic functions. Managed to install the printer complete with Epson drivers, gave it a test-run and all was well. I know all this is very basic and simple but I did get a sense of satisfaction doing it on a system I was unfamiliar with.

My point is, I have been thinking about replacing my ageing Windows laptop with an Apple machine. I liked the look of my first play this morning and would have liked to try a bit more. It seemed very cool - I think I'm being converted and think I would enjoy the learning curve referred to in posts above.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I've owned hand-me-down macs before.....including the original Macintosh with the B&W screen.

In June I bought a 13" Macbook Air because i wanted the lightest, fastest laptop possible for a two month trip overseas. It fit perfectly into my small backpack. Battery life is great.

It took me a week or so to get used to the different UI. (I also have a 14" HP Chromebook, so that's slightly different again).

I like the Mac.

I don't currently use a Windows laptop. I do have a Win 7 desktop PC with a 27" 3D monitor for 3D stuff on a big screen that isn't my TV.

I'm all over the map. :-) They all have their uses.

Another tip for new Mac'ers:

Time Machine is a brilliant tool. Even Mac's can have disks failing and then you really want a backup. Besides, Time Machine also keeps versions of your files. So if you delete or change something and find out later, you can still go "back in time" and get the version and/or file you want.

Can't recommend it strongly enough. Do backups, and do setup Time Machine to do automatic ones for you, so you won't forget.

I've been using Mac's for just under 8 years (2 x 17" Macbook Pro's and 1 x MacMini).
I'd struggle to fault it to be honest, with the exception for its lack of support for Dolby True HD or DTS Master HD...
It's the machine that lead to me buying iPod's, iPhone's, iPad's, the watch etc... what's next? An Alpine head unit to utilise Car OS? Oooooh....

And after a little research, looks like connecting with Bluetooth might be the best way to go right now.

Skip to about 12 minutes out in this video and you will see why I am probably not going to get anything with Carplay anytime soon.

Been Mac since 2005.

One of my favourite things as a photographer is that the ability to open image files - even RAW files - is just part of the OS and does not require any special app.

On the very rare occasions I have to do something on someone else's Windows machine, it feels like being handed a BBC Acorn.
