I am doing like wise as I want to ditch my last Windows machine a Surface Laptop 3. I am moving to Apple only but keeping a Linux Desktop for fun.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I see Safari now supports 4K playback for youtube. Used to previously use Chrome for that as it wasn't supported in Safari. Nice to see Apple catching up.

Installed on 3 MBPs in the household (2013,2014, 2015) with no discernible issues. Looking at installation on the (unsupported) 2012 Mini, which might be interesting.

So far, positive experiences only. So far...

interested to see how it goes on the mini.  I have a 2012 iMac (with SSD), that can't support it - haven't tried to force installation though

Apparently my January 2014 27" iMac 14.2 with NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M 1 GB, just misses out or have I got that wrong ?

And yet my App Store says there is a GarageBand App update but it requires Big Sur (GarageBand can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because macOS version 11 or later is required.) So if my iMac is not compatible why tell me there is an update available ?

No issues with update process. Looks really nice. Feels slower. I might plan a wipe and restore to clean it up. I usually do that anyway.

Looks like it's on the list

I recall with previous updates there were some things that missed out and some that snuck in.

Interesting - as my System Preference > Software Update says: Your Mac is up-to-date - macOS 10.15.7. And if I select macOS Big Sur in the mac App Store I get: The requested version of macOS is not available. Then if I scroll down on that page I see: Compatibility - Works on this mac

PS: iWorks have all updated automatically to 10.3.5 plus iMovie to 10.2.1 and now have the new app icons in my dock.

There's a range of articles around with instructions for installation on unsupported macs. Wifi and sleep mode issues are common. There are lists of the unsupported models affected. Personally I'd wait a month or two until either Apple adds it, snowballs chance. Or wait until workarounds are independently developed for the unsupported issues.

You could try Big Sur on an "unsupported" device by setting up a dual boot then nothing to lose, maybe.

Unfortunately for me; one of the main utilities I need to work on my MacBook [remote network based connection to USB printer] doesn't work under Big Sur.

Showstopper until [hopefully not if] the manufacturer updates it - they need to replace the kext now that OS11 block them.

They've been pretty good about updates until now; but this may be a step too far - we'll see, I guess!

Edit: kext not 'next', thanks autocorrect!
