tdgeek: Partly on topic, sorta, tanget-wise. I've read the odd review, and the appeared to be fine. Lower powered, don't expect quad i7, but perhaps real world is not as good.

Anyone else have one?

yes they are fine if you want the performance of a 5 year old Intel Core i7

for some people that might be fine.

The issue described in the op could be something different to a processor limitation. Core M is designed for a specific purpose and that is long battery life and this product has that in spades.

Here's an excerpt from the fairest review I read:

"The short version: The MacBook has the approximate CPU speed of a 2011 MacBook Air, the GPU speed of a 2012 MacBook Air, and the storage speed of a 2013 MacBook Air. It won't set any records, but it will do just about everything an Air will."

Link to the performance page but there are 8 other pages also.

If you need OSX and you need the outstanding battery life then that is the one you will buy. Otherwise it's a different story imho.

Thats what I gather from reviews, and I ignore Apple centric sites to get a more unbiased view.

all of the symptoms described sound like a CPU bottleneck

Just one thing, if you compare a mobile CPU to a desktop one an ancient desktop will trash the latest top end consumer mobile CPU.

But yes, the core M is for battery life not performance

There are certainly cpu and memory fault conditions which can cause low performance.

I think the bottom line in this particular case is that the unit was not returned for service so no assessment was made.

With Apple in general at the moment imho they are holding off a bit until after windows 10 to go to the next product design iteration.

GZT's links put in similar vein to a 2011 and 2012 MBA, which I'd consider fair for a current thinner, lighter more portable carry away laptop. TrustedReviews said it went well for a variety of tasks. So, as the OP's other half actually had an older MBA 11, it's odd, are they both on the same OS?

The Yoga 3 has the same CPU, is that a problem device also?

Just to close the loop on this one, the main thing you are paying for with this model is Retina and 200g less in weight. For all other cases you would go MacBook Air. Nice comparison at gizmodo

Depends on what you want to do and what you expect out of it. Another thing is, a lot of things require hard drive to be read and written repeatedly. So if one has SSD and one has spinning drive the SSD will beat out hands down

Then the performance will depend on other things. If the CPU is the same it will perform the same amount of call calculations per second. But there are other things

First gen Apple gear (and tech in general really) is usually not the best. The first gen MBA had a 4200RPM HDD rather than an SSD and was slow as a wet week for example.

I can't say I was finding the i7 in my 2010 MacBook Pro slow to the day I sold it last year, it got upgraded because of the want of retina, not because it was slow. So I fail to see how the specs of a 5 year old i7 could not pass for day to day tasks, which is what the macbook is built for really.
