Thanks, I ran the Onyx software and it certainly cleaned out a lot of of unnecessary stuff. However the problem still remains. So I ran diagnostics, CPU load is around 5%, 4 mb of ram used and 4 mb available. Ran a full virus scan, nothing found. Then I had a thought, I have a second profile that I created for my wife (but she never uses). Logged in with that and snap, everything runs fine. So I suspect that I have a corrupted user profile? So what now, can I repair it or what should I do? Thanks in advance  for your help with this

Do a search for Applejack

Its a command line utility that you use when you boot into single user mode [command-s]

Used it for years without any problems, can do checks on system and user prefs among other things.

If the issue is specific to one user account then I'd wager that any tests in single-user mode are going to be fruitless.

You point Applejack to a user directory, it then (I presume) does a check of the prefs files xml for errors.

As I said, I have used Applejack for years.

I have had machine that would not boot into any account fixed as well as corrupted user accounts made useable again.

Although it is a command line App, once it is running it does have a old fashioned "menu" system.

If your corrupt Profile is just a Guest Profile and NOT an Administrator Profile you can delete it. See here: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
